Un Formulario W-2 muestra la cantidad de impuestos retenidos de tu sueldo durante el año y se utiliza para presentar tu declaración de impuestos federales y estatales. Aquí encontrarás los conceptos básicos del mismo.


Introducción

Qué es el Formulario W-2

El IRS (siglas en inglés de Servicio de Impuestos Internos) requiere que los empleadores reporten la información de sueldos y salarios de los empleados en el Formulario W-2. Tu W-2 también informa el monto de los impuestos federales, estatales y otros retenidos de tu cheque de pago. Como empleado, la información en tu formulario W-2 es extremadamente importante para la preparación de tu declaración de impuestos. Para asegurarte de tenerlo a tiempo, el IRS requiere que tu empleador te envíe un formulario W-2 antes del 31 de enero siguiente al cierre del ejercicio fiscal, que suele ser 31 de diciembre.

W-2: salarios y retenciones

Sólo debes recibir un Formulario W-2 si eres un empleado. Si eres un contratista independiente o por cuenta propia, el trabajo que haces puede ser el mismo que el de un empleado, pero recibirás un informe de ingresos en el Formulario 1099 en lugar de un Formulario W-2.

El Formulario W-2 está dividido en casilleros que informan diversos temas relacionados con tus ingresos. En el recuadro 1 del Formulario W-2 se encuentra tu salario anual y el pago de salarios con el monto del impuesto federal retenido en el recuadro 2.

Debido a que sólo una parte de tus ingresos están sujetos a impuestos del Seguro Social, es posible que el cuadro 3 reporte una cantidad menor al total de los salarios del año. Otros casilleros del Formulario W-2 incluyen los salarios sujetos a impuestos de Medicare, impuestos del Seguro Social que son retenidos y la información sobre la retención de tu impuesto estatal sobre la renta, si corresponde.

Importancia de la retención de impuestos

Cuando el empleador retiene parte de tu sueldo para los impuestos federales sobre la renta, dichos importes se remiten al IRS durante todo el año. Puede que no te des cuenta, pero en la mayoría de los casos, no puedes esperar hasta 15 de abril para pagar tu cuenta fiscal en su conjunto. El IRS requiere que todos hagan pagos periódicos durante todo el año; sin embargo, tu empleador se hace cargo de esto por ti.

Al preparar tu declaración federal y calcular tu impuesto para el año, el importe de la retención que realizó tu empleador y que figura en el W-2 debe ser restado de tu cuenta de impuestos. Una vez que realices este cálculo, sabrás si debe esperar un reembolso o pagar un impuesto adicional. Si presentas una declaración de impuestos sobre los ingresos del estado, el mismo cálculo es necesario para el importe retenido destinado a pagar tus impuestos estatales.

Verificación de tu nombre y número de Seguro Social

La sección de información de identificación de la W-2 es esencialmente una función de seguimiento. Si el ingreso que informas en tu declaración de impuestos no coincide con la información de tu Formulario W-2, el IRS va a querer saber por qué. Del mismo modo, el IRS comparará los montos de los pagos reportados con los montos del formulario de declaración de impuestos de tu empleador para corroborar su exactitud.

Pero lo más importante es que, debido a que el IRS recibe una copia de tu Formulario W-2, ya sabe si debes impuestos y puede contactarte si no presentas una declaración de impuestos. Si el nombre o número de Seguro Social de tu Formulario W-2 es incorrecto, debes informarlo inmediatamente a tu empleador para que lo corrija.

Adjuntando tu W-2

Al terminar tus declaraciones de impuestos y prepararlas para presentarlas, recuerda que una copia de tu W-2 siempre debe estar adjunta. Si estás utilizando el servicio e-file a través de TurboTax, entonces la información de tu W-2 es enviada junto con tu declaración de impuestos. Sin embargo, si presentas tu declaración de impuestos por correo debes recordar colocar una copia junto con tu declaración.
