Puntos clave

  • Cuando detallas tus deducciones, puedes deducir tus impuestos sobre los ingresos estatales y locales, o tus impuestos sobre las ventas estatales y locales. Así es: $1,200,000,000,000.  Ese mismo año, la suma correspondiente a la deducción estándar que reclamaron los contribuyentes fue de $747,000 millones. Es probable que algunos de los que tomaron el camino fácil se hayan autoengañado. (Si cumpliste 65 años en 2023 o antes, recuerda que te corresponde una deducción estándar mayor a la de tus colegas más jóvenes).

Estas son las 10 deducciones de impuestos que más se pasan por alto. Reclámalas si te corresponde y conserva más dinero en tu bolsillo.

1. Impuestos estatales sobre las ventas

Esta deducción tiene sentido principalmente para quienes viven en estados que no imponen un impuesto sobre el ingreso. Nos referimos a Alaska, Florida, Nevada, Nuevo Hampshire, Dakota del Sur, Tennessee, Texas, Washington y Wyoming. Esto es un factor debido a lo siguiente. Tienes que elegir entre deducir impuestos estatales y locales sobre los ingresos o impuestos estatales y locales sobre las ventas. Para la mayoría de los ciudadanos de estados que cobran el impuesto sobre los ingresos, la deducción de impuestos estatales y locales sobre los ingresos suele ser la mejor opción.

Para quienes viven en un estado que no cobra dicho impuesto, hay dos formas de reclamar la deducción del impuesto sobre las ventas en la declaración de impuestos. Una alternativa es usar las tablas que el IRS proporcionó para tu estado a fin de determinar qué es lo que puedes deducir. Además, si compraste un vehículo, un bote, una aeronave o una vivienda, o si hiciste en tu vivienda mejoras significativas, tal vez puedas agregar el impuesto estatal sobre las ventas que pagaste sobre esos costosos artículos por el monto que se indica en las tablas del IRS hasta el límite máximo para tu estado. 2. Dividendos reinvertidos

Esta no es realmente una deducción de impuestos; es un ajuste que puede ahorrarte mucho dinero. Y es algo que muchos contribuyentes pasan por alto. Si, como la mayoría de los inversionistas, tienes dividendos de acciones y fondos mutuos que se reinvierten automáticamente en más acciones, recuerda que cada reinversión aumenta tu “base de impuestos” en el fondo mutuo o de acciones. A su vez, eso reduce la cantidad de ganancia de capital tributable (o aumenta la pérdida que permite ahorrar impuestos) cuando vendes tus acciones.

3. Contribuciones benéficas extraordinarias

Es difícil pasar por alto las donaciones caritativas significativas que realizaste durante el año mediante cheque o deducción de nómina. Pero los pequeños aportes que realizas también suman y puedes deducirlos de los costos extraordinarios en los que incurres mientras realizas una buena acción. Los ingredientes con los que habitualmente cocinas en el comedor popular de una organización sin fines de lucro calificada, por ejemplo, o el costo de los sellos que compras para recaudar fondos en tu escuela cuentan como contribución caritativa. Si condujiste tu auto con fines benéficos en 2022, recuerda deducir 14 centavos por milla.

4. Intereses pagados sobre préstamos estudiantiles tuyos o de otra persona

Antes, si los padres u otra persona devolvían el préstamo estudiantil de un estudiante, a ninguno se le otorgaba una exención de impuestos. Para obtener una deducción, la ley establecía que ambos tenían que ser responsables del pago de la deuda y efectivamente pagarla ellos mismos. Pero ahora hay una excepción. Tal vez sepas que podrías ser elegible para tomar una deducción, pero incluso si otra persona devuelve el préstamo, el IRS considera que esta te dio el dinero a ti y que entonces tú pagaste la deuda. Por lo tanto, un estudiante no declarado como dependiente puede calificar para deducir hasta $2,500 de los intereses sobre préstamos estudiantiles que hayan pagado tú u otra persona.

5. Gastos de mudanza

Mientras que la mayoría de los contribuyentes perdieron la posibilidad de deducir gastos de mudanza a partir de 2018, un grupo importante de personas todavía puede reclamar sus gastos de mudanza ante el IRS. ¿Quiénes son? El personal militar. Si eres personal militar en servicio activo y te están reubicando, puedes deducir estos gastos, salvo que recibas un reembolso del Gobierno por la mudanza.

Asimismo, si la mudanza es permanente, y la reubicación fue una orden militar, no tienes que pagar impuestos sobre los reembolsos de gastos de mudanza calificados. 6. Crédito por Gastos de Cuidado de Hijos Menores y Dependientes

Un crédito tributario es mucho mejor que una deducción de impuestos, dado que reduce tu factura de impuestos dólar por dólar. Así que pasarlo por alto es más doloroso que pasar por alto una deducción, que simplemente reduce la cantidad del ingreso sujeta a impuestos.

Sin embargo, es fácil pasar por alto el Crédito por Gastos de Cuidado de Hijos Menores y Dependientes si pagas las facturas de cuidado de tu hijo mediante una cuenta de reembolso en tu trabajo. Para 2022, la ley te permite recuperar hasta $5,000 de esos gastos mediante una cuenta de reembolso con ventajas tributarias en el trabajo. Hasta $6,000 en gastos de cuidado pueden calificar para el crédito, pero los $5,000 de una cuenta con ventajas tributarias no se pueden usar. Así que, si usas el máximo de $5,000 mediante un plan en el trabajo, pero gastas más en el cuidado de tus hijos menores debido a cuestiones relacionadas con el trabajo, puedes reclamar el crédito por un importe adicional de hasta $1,000. Esto reduciría tu factura de impuestos al menos $200 con el valor mínimo (20 %) de los gastos. El porcentaje de crédito asciende para los hogares de menores ingresos.

Sin embargo, hay grandes cambios para 2021. El Plan de Rescate Estadounidense, que se convirtió en ley el 11 de marzo de 2021, generó cambios significativos en la cantidad del Crédito por Gastos de Cuidado de Hijos Menores y Dependientes, y la forma en que se puede reclamar, solo para el año tributario 2021. La nueva ley aumenta no solo el crédito, sino también el número de contribuyentes que podrán beneficiarse de la tasa más alta del crédito. Además, este pasa a ser totalmente reembolsable.  Eso significa que, a diferencia de años anteriores, se puede obtener el crédito aunque no se adeuden impuestos.

Los cambios en el Crédito por Gastos de Cuidado de Hijos Menores y Dependientes que se aplican únicamente al año tributario 2021 (los impuestos que presentas en 2022) incluyen lo siguiente:

  • El porcentaje máximo del crédito aumentó del 35 % al 50 % de los gastos calificados.
  • Los gastos máximos calificados para el cuidado de hijos menores y dependientes que se usan a fin de calcular el crédito aumentaron de $3,000 a $8,000 para una persona que califica y de $6,000 a $16,000 para dos o más personas que califican.
  • El nivel del Ingreso Bruto Ajustado (AGI, por sus siglas en inglés) en el que se reduce el porcentaje del crédito aumentó de $15,000 a $125,000.

También para el año tributario 2021, se incrementó de $5,000 a $10,500 la cantidad máxima que se puede aportar a la cuenta de gastos flexible para el cuidado de dependientes y la cantidad de beneficios libres de impuestos proporcionados por el empleador para el cuidado de dependientes.

7. Crédito Tributario por Ingreso del Trabajo

Millones de personas con niveles menores de ingresos toman este crédito cada año. Sin embargo, según el IRS, el 25 % de los contribuyentes elegibles para el Crédito Tributario por Ingreso del Trabajo (EITC, por sus siglas en inglés) no lo reclama. Algunas personas lo pasan por alto porque las reglas pueden ser algo complicadas. Otras simplemente desconocen que califican para él.

El EITC es un crédito tributario reembolsable, no una deducción, con cantidades máximas que difieren según el estado civil tributario y que van de $600 a $7,430 para 2023. El crédito está diseñado para complementar el salario de los trabajadores con ingresos bajos a moderados. Pero el crédito no se aplica simplemente a las personas con menores ingresos. Decenas de millones de individuos y familias que anteriormente se clasificaban como “clase media”, incluidos muchos trabajadores administrativos, ahora se consideran de “bajos ingresos” por alguno de estos motivos:

  • Perdieron un trabajo
  • Tuvieron una reducción salarial
  • Trabajaron menos horas durante el año

El reembolso exacto que recibes depende de tu ingreso, de tu estado civil y del tamaño de tu familia. Para recibir un reembolso del EITC, tienes que presentar una declaración de impuestos, incluso si no debes nada de impuestos. Además, si fuiste elegible para reclamar el crédito en el pasado, pero no lo hiciste, puedes realizar la presentación en cualquier momento durante el año para reclamar un reembolso del EITC para tres años tributarios anteriores, como máximo.

8. Impuestos estatales que pagaste la primavera pasada

¿Debías impuestos cuando presentaste tu declaración de impuestos de 2022 en 2023? Entonces recuerda incluir esa cantidad con la deducción detallada de tus impuestos estatales en tu declaración de 2023, junto con los impuestos estatales sobre el ingreso retenidos de tus cheques salariales o pagados mediante pagos trimestrales de impuestos estimados. A partir de 2018, la deducción para los impuestos estatales y locales se limita a un máximo de $10,000 por año.

9. Refinanciación de puntos de hipoteca

Cuando compras una vivienda, con frecuencia puedes deducir puntos pagados para recibir tu hipoteca completa de una sola vez. Sin embargo, cuando refinancias una hipoteca, tienes que deducir los puntos durante el plazo del nuevo préstamo. Eso significa que puedes deducir del primero al trigésimo punto por año, si se trata de una hipoteca a 30 años; es decir, $33 por año por cada $1,000 de puntos que hayas pagado. No parece mucho, pero, ¿por qué dejarlo pasar?

Además, el año que cancelas el préstamo (porque vendiste la casa o porque volviste a refinanciar) puedes deducir todos los puntos que aún no se han deducido, a menos que refinancies con el mismo prestamista.
