Impuestos estimados: Cómo determinar cuánto pagar y cuándo hacerlo

Puntos clave

• Si tienes previsto adeudar más de $1,000 de impuestos federales en el año tributario, puede que debas pagar impuestos trimestrales estimados mediante el Formulario 1040-ES o pagar una multa por pago incompleto.

• Si tu retención de impuesto federal sobre los ingresos (sumado a todos los impuestos estimados pagados a tiempo) asciende a por lo menos el 90 % del total de impuestos que deberás en este año tributario, o a por lo menos un 100 % del total de impuestos de la declaración del año anterior (110 % del Ingreso Bruto Ajustado [AGI, por sus siglas en inglés] superior a $75,000 para contribuyentes solteros y contribuyentes que presentan la declaración por separado, y $150,000 para los contribuyentes casados que presentan su declaración de forma conjunta), lo más probable es que no tengas que realizar pagos de impuestos estimados.

Averiguar cuándo y cómo pagar

Si eres empleado, por lo general, tu empleador retiene impuestos de cada cheque salarial y envía el dinero al IRS (Servicio de Impuestos Internos) y, probablemente, también al Gobierno de tu estado. De esta forma, pagas tus impuestos sobre los ingresos sobre la marcha. Y si eres como la mayoría de los asalariados, obtendrás un lindo reembolso cuando presentes tu declaración de impuestos.

Pero, si eres trabajador por cuenta propia, o si tienes ingresos adicionales a tu salario, es posible que tengas que pagar impuestos estimados cada trimestre. Tal vez debas impuestos estimados si recibes ingresos que no están sujetos a retenciones, por ejemplo:

  • Ingresos por intereses
  • Dividendos
  • Ganancias por venta de acciones u otros activos
  • Ganancias de un negocio
  • Pensión para el cónyuge divorciado sujeta a impuestos

¿Tengo que pagar impuestos estimados?

Eso depende de tu situación. La regla indica que debes pagar tus impuestos a lo largo del año a través de retenciones o pagos de impuestos estimados.

Si a la hora de presentar tu declaración de impuestos, no pagaste suficientes impuestos sobre los ingresos a través de retenciones o pagos trimestrales de impuestos estimados, es posible que se te aplique una multa por pago incompleto.

Para determinar si tienes que pagar impuestos trimestrales estimados, responde estas preguntas:

  1. ¿Tienes previsto deber menos de $1,000 de impuestos para el año tributario una vez que se reste tu retención de impuestos federales sobre los ingresos de la cantidad total de impuestos que esperas deber este año? Si es así, puedes estar tranquilo; no tienes que pagar impuestos estimados.
  2. ¿Tienes previsto que tu retención de impuestos federales sobre los ingresos, ascienda por lo menos al 90 % del impuesto total que adeudarás en este año tributario? Si es así, estás a salvo y no tienes que pagar impuestos estimados.
  3. ¿Tienes previsto que tu retención del impuesto sobre los ingresos sea de al menos el 100 % del impuesto total de tu declaración del año anterior? O bien, si tu Ingreso Bruto Ajustado (AGI, por sus siglas en inglés) (Formulario 1040, ) de tu declaración de impuestos fue de más de $150,000 ($75,000 si eres casado y presentas la declaración por separado), ¿esperas que tu retención de impuestos sobre los ingresos sea de por lo menos el 110 % del impuesto total del año anterior? Si es así, no estás obligado a pagar impuestos estimados.

Si respondiste “No” a todas estas preguntas, tienes que pagar impuestos estimados usando el Formulario 1040-ES. Para evitar una multa, tu pago del total de impuestos (impuestos estimados más retenciones) durante el año debe cumplir con uno de los requisitos que acabamos de explicar.

¿Qué opción debería elegir?

 Eso depende de tu situación.

La opción más segura para evitar la multa por pago incompleto es apuntar al “100 % de tus impuestos del año anterior”. Si tu ingreso bruto ajustado del año anterior fue mayor que $150,000 (o $75,000 para quienes están casados y presentaron una declaración por separado el año pasado), tendrás que pagar el 110 % de tus impuestos del año anterior para cumplir con el requisito de “puerto seguro”. Si cumples con estos requisitos, no tendrás que pagar una multa por pago incompleto de impuestos estimados, sin importar cuál sea la cantidad de impuestos que debas según tu declaración.

Si tienes previsto que este año tu ingreso sea inferior al del año anterior y no quieres pagar más impuestos que los que piensas que vas a deber a fin de año, puedes elegir pagar el 90% de tu factura de impuestos del año actual. Si tus pagos estimados y retenciones suman, en total, menos del 90 % de lo que adeudas, es posible que se te aplique una multa por pago incompleto. Así que tal vez quieras evitar que tus pagos ronden la marca del 90 % para tener un margen de seguridad.

Si tienes previsto que tus ingresos de este año sean mayores que los del año pasado y no quieres terminar debiendo impuestos cuando presentes tu declaración, trata de realizar pagos de impuestos estimados suficientes para cubrir el 100 % de tu responsabilidad fiscal respecto del impuesto sobre los ingresos del año actual.


 

Nota de TurboTax: Si tienes previsto que este año tus ingresos sean inferiores a los del año anterior y no quieres pagar más impuestos que los que piensas que vas a deber a fin de año, puedes elegir pagar el 90 % de tu factura de impuestos estimados del año actual en lugar del 100 % (o del 110 % en función del AGI) de tu factura de impuestos del año anterior.

 


¿Qué debo hacer para calcular lo que debo?

Tienes que conseguir un buen estimado del ingreso y de las deducciones que reportarás en tu declaración de impuestos federales.

Puedes usar el software de preparación de declaraciones de impuestos TurboTax para que haga los cálculos por ti, o puedes obtener una copia de la hoja de trabajo que acompaña al Formulario 1040-ES y hacerlo tú mismo. De cualquier manera, necesitarás algunos elementos para poder planificar cuánto debes pagar de impuestos estimados:

  • Tu declaración del año anterior. Usa tu declaración de impuestos federales del año anterior como método de verificación para asegurarte de incluir todos los ingresos y deducciones que esperas tomar en tu declaración de impuestos del año actual. También debes observar los impuestos totales que pagaste si vas a basar tus pagos de impuestos estimados en el 100 % o el 110 % de tus impuestos del año anterior.
  • El registro de los pagos de impuestos estimados y las retenciones que ya hiciste para el año. Debes tomar en cuenta esos pagos para determinar la cantidad de impuestos que continúas debiendo, así que ten a la mano tu registro de transacciones en cheques y el último talón de pago para buscar las cantidades y las fechas en que pagaste.

Considera pagar con tu reembolso

Si crees que adeudarás dinero cuando presentes tu declaración de impuestos del año próximo, una manera sencilla de adelantar trabajo al pagar tu factura es aplicar tu reembolso a los impuestos del año próximo. Si no van a retener de tu salario el impuesto federal sobre los ingresos, o si tienes otros ingresos y tus retenciones no serán suficientes para cubrir la factura de impuestos, probablemente tengas que realizar pagos trimestrales de impuestos estimados. Tener la totalidad o parte de tu pago en exceso aplicado a tus impuestos estimados es una forma relativamente fácil de pagar al menos una parte de lo que debes para el año próximo.

¿Qué sucede si no pago?

 Podrías terminar adeudando al IRS una multa por pago incompleto, además de los impuestos que adeudas. La multa dependerá de la cantidad que debas y por cuánto tiempo la hayas debido al IRS.

Resultado: Cuando presentes tu declaración, Podrías tener que hacer un cheque a nombre del IRS por una cantidad mayor.

¿Debería pagar cantidades iguales?

Lo habitual es que pagues tus impuestos estimados en cuatro cuotas iguales, aunque podrías terminar pagando cuotas por cantidades diferentes en algunos casos, como los siguientes:

  • Si tu pago en exceso del año anterior se acreditó para tus pagos d
  • Si no calculas tus pagos estimados hasta después del 15 de abril, que es cuando suele vencer el primer pago.
  • Si de forma inesperada, generaste mucho dinero en un trimestre.

Ejemplo:

Calculas que tienes que pagar $10,000 en impuestos estimados durante todo el año y no realizas tu primer pago hasta el 15 de junio (cuando vence el segundo pago estimado), así que tu primer pago será de $5,000. Tus pagos de septiembre y enero serán de $2,500 cada uno. Sin embargo, es posible que aún debas una multa por pago incompleto por el primer trimestre debido a que el primer pago no se realizó antes de que venciera la fecha límite del 15 de abril.

Para pescadores y agricultores

Tienes que cumplir con criterios especiales, pero, tal vez, termines pagando impuestos estimados por una cantidad menor. Se te considera un agricultor o pescador calificado si ganas más de dos tercios de tus ingresos sujetos a impuestos por actividades agropecuarias o de pesca comercial.
