¿Puedes obtener un beneficio tributario por enviar a tus hijos a la escuela?

Si envías a tus hijos a una escuela pública desde kínder hasta 12.° grado, por lo general, no obtendrás ningún beneficio tributario para ti. Del mismo modo, en la mayoría de los casos, no obtendrás un beneficio significativo sobre tus impuestos por enviar a tus hijos a escuelas privadas.

La ley sobre impuestos federales no te permite deducir el costo de matrícula de escuelas privadas para reducir tu responsabilidad fiscal federal.

Si tu hijo asiste a una escuela privada porque tiene necesidades especiales, podrías obtener un beneficio tributario sobre el costo de matrícula de la escuela privada K-12. Para calificar, necesitarás una constancia médica que pruebe que tu hijo requiere el acceso a educación privada especial. Y, si tu hijo califica, tal vez puedas deducir el costo de clases particulares o capacitación especiales además del costo de matrícula.

¿Qué beneficios tributarios están disponibles para pagar los costos de educación?

Lamentablemente, por lo general, el pago del costo de matrícula de una escuela privada no puede deducirse en tu declaración de impuestos federales sobre los ingresos. Por otra parte, tienes acceso a dos tipos de cuentas que pueden reducir el costo de gastos de educación calificados.

Cuentas con ventajas tributarias para pagar gastos de educación calificados

Puedes usar dos cuentas con ventajas tributarias para ayudar a pagar gastos de educación calificados: la cuenta de ahorros para la educación (ESA, por sus siglas en inglés) Coverdell y el plan de matrícula calificado (también conocido como plan 529). Estas cuentas te permiten invertir dinero para pagar ciertos gastos de educación desde kínder hasta 12.° grado, así como gastos universitarios y otros gastos de educación calificados.

Cuenta de ahorros para la educación (ESA) Coverdell

Si bien, por lo general, no puedes usar el costo de matrícula de una escuela privada para reducir tu responsabilidad fiscal de manera directa, el Gobierno podría ofrecer cierto alivio tributario en la forma de una cuenta de ahorros para la educación Coverdell, o ESA. Estas cuentas te permiten invertir tus ahorros para la educación sin pagar impuestos sobre las ganancias. Los fondos de cuentas ESA se pueden usar para cubrir gastos de educación calificados desde kínder hasta 12.° grado, por ejemplo:

  • costos de matrícula;
  • libros de texto;
  • otros insumos necesarios para el programa de educación de tu hijo.

Cada año, se pueden retirar de estas cuentas hasta $10,000 libres de impuestos por estudiante para pagar esos costos. Los beneficios tributarios de aportar a una cuenta Coverdell ESA tienen un tope: las contribuciones de cada beneficiario tienen un límite de $2,000 por año.  Por ejemplo: si los abuelos de tu hijo aportan $1,000 a su cuenta Coverdell, tú solo podrías aportar $1,000 más para el año.

Tus ingresos también podrían reducir los límites de las contribuciones.

  • Si tu Ingreso Bruto Ajustado Modificado de 2023 supera los $95,000 (o $190,000 si presentas tu declaración de manera conjunta), notarás una reducción gradual en los límites de tus contribuciones hasta que llegues a $190,000 ($210,000 si presentas tu declaración en conjunto); a partir de esa cantidad, ya no podrás hacer más contribuciones.
  • Si eres elegible, puedes hacer contribuciones a la cuenta hasta que tu hijo cumpla 18 años (esto no se aplica si tu hijo tiene necesidades especiales y más de 18 años).

 

Nota de TurboTax:

Dos créditos educativos populares, el Crédito de la Oportunidad Estadounidense y el Crédito Perpetuo por Aprendizaje, pueden ser utilizados solamente para pagar el costo de educación superior. No se pueden utilizar para reducir el costo relacionado a educación de Kínder a duodécimo grado.

Planes 529 de ahorro para la educación

Si bien el crédito está orientado a padres o tutores que trabajan, si fuiste estudiante de tiempo completo o estuviste desempleado durante parte del año, también podrías calificar para reclamar el Crédito por Gastos de Cuidado de Hijos menores y Dependientes.

Si pagaste por servicios de un programa extraescolar, guardería, niñera, campamento de verano o de otro proveedor de servicios de cuidado para un hijo menor de 13 años o un dependiente con discapacidad de cualquier edad que califica, es posible que seas elegible para un crédito sobre tus impuestos de 2023 de hasta el 35 %, sujeto a los siguientes límites:

  • hasta $3,000 de gastos calificados (para un crédito máximo de $1,050) por un hijo o dependiente;
  • hasta $6,000 de gastos calificados (para un crédito máximo de $2,100) por dos o más hijos o dependientes.

Por ejemplo: para el año tributario 2023, un contribuyente con una persona calificada, $3,000 en gastos calificados y un AGI de $60,000 calificaría para un crédito no reembolsable de aproximadamente $600 (20 % x $3,000).

Crédito Tributario de la Oportunidad Estadounidénse

El Crédito Tributario de la Oportunidad Estadounidénse es un crédito disponible para estudiantes, para pagar el costo de asistir a la universidad. A Form 1040 return with limited credits is one that's filed using IRS Form 1040 only (with the exception of the specific covered situations described below). Roughly 37% of taxpayers are eligible.
