Cinco formas ocultas de aumentar tu reembolso de impuestos

Estas son cinco formas infalibles de reducir tu responsabilidad tributaria a la hora de presentar tus impuestos. No pagues más de lo que adeudas o, incluso, aumenta tu reembolso de impuestos.

  • El presentar como casado que presenta por separado puede ofrecer ahorros tributarios bajo ciertas condiciones, incluyendo cuando un esposo tiene una gran cantidad de gastos médicos deducibles. Aumenta tu reembolso de impuestos

Aunque los estadounidenses pueden estar en desacuerdo con la forma en que el Gobierno gasta sus impuestos, a la hora de hacer la declaración, muchos de nosotros buscamos formas de no pagar más de lo que adeudamos o, incluso, de aumentar nuestro reembolso de impuestos. Estas estrategias van más allá de lo obvio para ofrecerte formas reales de reducir tu responsabilidad tributaria.

1. Reconsidera el estado civil que usarás en tu declaración de impuestos

Una de las primeras decisiones que tomas al preparar tu declaración de impuestos (la elección de tu estado civil) puede afectar la cantidad de tu reembolso, especialmente si estás casado. Si bien aproximadamente el 96 % de las parejas casadas presentan una declaración conjunta cada año, esta no siempre es la mejor opción.

  • El Crédito Tributario por Hijos está disponible para los cónyuges que presentan su declaración por separado. Para el año 2020, el crédito asciende a $2,000 por hijo menor de 17 años, y ahora puede ser reclamado por una persona que presenta su declaración por separado y tiene un ingreso bruto ajustado inferior a $200,000 ($400,000 para las personas que presentan una declaración conjunta).
  • Solamente para la declaración de impuestos de 2021 (que prepararás en 2022), el Crédito Tributario por Hijos se amplía con el Plan de Rescate Estadounidense, que incrementa el crédito por hijo a $3,600 o $3,000 según la edad de tu hijo (hasta 17 años de edad). El crédito también es completamente reembolsable para 2021. Para que el dinero llegue más rápido a las manos de las familias, el IRS (Servicio de Impuestos Internos) realizará pagos anticipados del Crédito Tributario por Hijos de 2021 a partir de julio de 2021. Optar por presentar declaraciones por separado puede generar algún inconveniente, como la pérdida de ciertas deducciones disponibles para las personas que presentan una declaración conjunta. Tendrás que evaluar esto cuidadosamente para maximizar el potencial de tu reembolso. Además, ambos cónyuges deben tomar la deducción estándar o detallar las deducciones. No pueden usar distintas opciones en las dos declaraciones.

Los contribuyentes solteros que reclaman un dependiente calificado suelen poder reducir sus impuestos si presentan la declaración como cabezas de familia y cumplen con los requisitos correspondientes.

  • Este estado civil goza de una deducción estándar más alta y categorías tributarias más favorables que la declaración como soltero.
  • Un dependiente calificadopuede ser un hijo al que hayas sustentado financieramente y que haya vivido contigo durante más de seis meses. O bien, puede ser uno de tus padres de edad avanzada al que hayas proporcionado sustento financiero.

Muchos contribuyentes que cuidan de sus padres de edad avanzada no saben que pueden optar por el estado civil de cabeza de familia. Si proporcionas más de la mitad del sustento financiero de tus padres (aunque no vivan contigo), puedes presentar la declaración como cabeza de familia.

2. Aprovecha las deducciones de impuestos

Existen muchas deducciones de las que tal vez no estés al tanto y varias de ellas suelen pasarse por alto. Las deducciones para las que califiques pueden suponer una diferencia significativa en tu reembolso de impuestos. Entre ellas, se encuentran las siguientes:

  • Impuesto estatal sobre las ventas: mediante la calculadora del IRS, puedes determinar la cantidad de impuestos estatales y locales sobre las ventas que puedes deducir.
  • Dividendos reinvertidos: técnicamente, no es una deducción, pero puede reducir tu responsabilidad tributaria general. Cuando los dividendos de tus fondos de inversión se reinviertan automáticamente, inclúyelos en tu base de costo. De ese modo, cuando vendas acciones, podrías reducir las ganancias de capital sujetas a impuestos.
  • Contribuciones caritativas de tu bolsillo: las grandes donaciones no son la única forma de obtener deducciones. Lleva la cuenta también de los pequeños gastos que califiquen, como los ingredientes de ese delicioso pastel que donaste para la feria de pastelería. Puede que te sorprenda la rapidez con la que se acumulan unos pocos desembolsos caritativos aquí y allá.
  • Intereses sobre préstamos estudiantiles: aunque no los hayas pagado tú, puedes deducirlos siempre que seas tú quien tiene la obligación de pagarlos. Según las nuevas pautas, si otra persona paga el préstamo, el IRS lo considera como si te hubieran dado el dinero y lo hubieras utilizado para pagar el préstamo estudiantil. Si cumples con todos los requisitos, serías elegible para la deducción.

Solo para el 2021:

Para el 2021, el Plan de Rescate Estadounidense introduce cambios significativos en la cantidad y la forma en que se puede reclamar el Crédito Tributario por Gastos de Cuidado de Hijos Menores y Dependientes. El plan aumenta la cantidad de los gastos elegibles para el crédito, atenúa la reducción del crédito debido a los niveles de ingresos y también ahora es totalmente reembolsable. Esto significa que, a diferencia de otros años, se puede obtener el crédito, aunque no se adeuden impuestos.

Por lo tanto, para el año tributario 2021 (los impuestos que presentarás en 2022):

  • La cantidad de los gastos calificados aumenta de $3,000 en 2020 a $8,000 para una persona calificada y de $6,000 en 2020 a $16,000 para dos o más personas calificadas.
  • El porcentaje de gastos calificados elegibles para el crédito aumenta del 35 % al 50 %.
  • El inicio de la reducción del crédito es $125,000 de Ingreso Bruto Ajustado (AGI, por sus siglas en inglés).

También para el año tributario 2021, se incrementa de $5,000 a $10,500 la cantidad máxima que se puede aportar a la cuenta de gastos flexibles para el cuidado de dependientes y la cantidad de beneficios libres de impuestos proporcionados por el empleador para el cuidado de dependientes.

  • Crédito Tributario por Ingreso del Trabajo o EITC: (por sus siglas en inglés): este crédito ayuda a las familias con niveles de ingresos bajos y moderados. Está pensado para beneficiar a las familias trabajadoras con hijos. Si tienes tres o más hijos que califiquen, el crédito podría ser de hasta $7,430 para el año tributario 2022, y el resultado neto podría ser un reembolso, aunque no tengas que pagar impuestos.
  • Impuesto estatal sobre los ingresos pagado en la declaración del año anterior: si el año anterior pagaste dinero en tu declaración de impuestos estatal sobre los ingresos, puedes agregarlo a cualquier otro impuesto estatal sobre los ingresos hasta un máximo de $10,000 y usarlo como una deducción detallada.
  • Ciertos honorarios por servicio de jurado: si tu empresa te pagó mientras prestabas servicio de jurado y tu empleador te exigió que le entregaras el pago que recibiste del tribunal por dicho servicio, puedes reclamar la cantidad que entregaste como un ajuste de tus ingresos.
  • Millaje por cuestiones médicas: sujeto a un límite general de AGI para el total de los gastos médicos y con un valor de $0.22 por milla en 2023 dependiendo de la parte del año. El límite es cualquier gasto médico calificado no reembolsado que exceda el 7.5 % de tu AGI.
  • Millaje por cuestiones de caridadtotalmente deducible a $0.14 por milla en 2023. Por lo tanto, si condujiste 50 millas por semana para ser voluntario de una organización de caridad, eso representa una deducción adicional de $364:
    • 52 semanas/año x 50 millas/semana = 2,600 millas que condujiste en un año
    • 2,600 millas x $0.14/milla = $364

Es importante mantener un buen registro de tus deducciones, especialmente cuando no recibes ningún tipo de recibo, como en el caso de algunas contribuciones de caridad y millaje por cuestiones de caridad o médicas. No se requiere nada extravagante; un cuaderno en la guantera está bien. Asegúrate de llevar un registro de lo siguiente:

  • la fecha, las millas recorridas y el propósito médico o caritativo de cada viaje;
  • el valor de mercado de las donaciones en especie, como ropa y artículos domésticos;
  • los dólares que gastas para hacer una obra de caridad (por ejemplo, cuando cocinas para una recaudación de fondos, el costo de los ingredientes es deducible, pero el valor del tiempo que dedicaste a hornear no lo es).

Nota de TurboTax:

 Las contribuciones a cuentas IRA tradicionales pueden reducir tu ingreso tributable, y tienes hasta la fecha límite para presentar (a menos que se retrase debido a que sea fin de semana o festivo) para contribuir a una IRA tradicional para el año previo. 

3. Maximiza tus contribuciones a cuentas IRA y HSA

Tienes hasta la fecha límite de presentación (a menos que se retrase debido a un fin de semana o un día festivo) para abrir una cuenta IRA tradicional o contribuir a ella para el año tributario anterior. Eso te da la flexibilidad de reclamar el crédito en tu declaración, presentarla antes y utilizar tu reembolso para abrir la cuenta.

  • Las contribuciones a una cuenta IRA tradicional pueden reducir tus ingresos sujetos a impuestos. Puedes aprovechar la contribución máxima y, si tienes al menos 50 años, con la disposición de contribuciones para ponerte al día puedes aumentar los fondos de tu cuenta IRA.
  • Aunque las contribuciones a una cuenta Roth IRA no ofrecen ninguna deducción, puedes calificar para el valioso Crédito del Ahorrador si cumples los parámetros de ingresos.
  • Si eres un trabajador por cuenta propia, tienes hasta el 15 de octubre para realizar contribuciones a determinados planes de jubilación para trabajo por cuenta propia, siempre que solicites a tiempo una prórroga. Si no solicitas una prórroga, el plazo de presentación normal para ese año es la fecha límite para la mayoría de las contribuciones.

Las contribuciones antes de impuestos a una cuenta de ahorros para gastos médicos (HSA, por sus siglas en inglés) también pueden reducir tus ingresos sujetos a impuestos. Además, puedes hacerlas hasta la fecha límite de presentación. Hay que cumplir ciertos requisitos para poder abrir y contribuir a una HSA:

  • Debes estar inscrito en un plan de seguro médico con deducibles elevados que alcancen o superen las cantidades exigidas por el IRS.
  • Ese plan también debe imponer los límites máximos de gastos de bolsillo anuales que cumplan con las limitaciones del IRS.

No podrás participar en una HSA si se produce alguna de las siguientes circunstancias:

  • Tienes algún otro plan de cobertura médica "first dollar" (cobertura plena sin deducible)
  • Estás inscrito en el programa Medicare
  • Se te reclama como dependiente en la declaración de otro contribuyente

4. Recuerda que cumplir con los plazos puede aumentar tu reembolso de impuestos

Los contribuyentes que respetan el calendario aumentan sus posibilidades de obtener un reembolso mayor. Busca pagos o contribuciones que puedas hacer antes de que termine el año para reducir tus ingresos sujetos a impuestos. Por ejemplo:

  • Este podría ser el momento de hacer algunas donaciones caritativas, pero asegúrate de que se trate de una organización de caridad calificada y de llevar el control de tus gastos en tus registros.
  • Si eres un trabajador por cuenta propia, analiza las compras que debas hacer y que puedan considerarse deducibles. Compra cosas como equipos de oficina y programas de software antes de que acabe el año para ayudar a aumentar tu reembolso.
  • Si puedes reclamar la deducción por el uso comercial del hogar, puedes incluso deducir el costo de pintar la oficina que tienes en tu hogar si quieres empezar el nuevo año con un aspecto nuevo en tu espacio de trabajo.

5. Conviértete en un experto en créditos tributarios

Los créditos tributarios suelen funcionar mejor que las deducciones como potenciadores de reembolsos, ya que reducen tus impuestos dólar por dólar. Si obtienes un crédito de $100, recibes $100 de descuento en tus impuestos. Muchos contribuyentes se olvidan de reclamar los créditos tributarios.

La Ley de Asignaciones Consolidadas (CAA, por sus siglas en inglés) se promulgó el 27 de diciembre de 2020 como una medida de estímulo para brindar alivio a las personas afectadas por la pandemia. Para el año tributario 2020, la CAA permite que los contribuyentes usen sus ingresos del trabajo de 2019 (si fueron más altos que los de 2020) para calcular el Crédito Tributario Adicional por Hijos (ACTC, por sus siglas en inglés) y el Crédito Tributario por Ingreso del Trabajo. Para el año 2021, los contribuyentes pueden utilizar sus ingresos de 2021 o 2019 para maximizar el crédito.

Si eres un estudiante universitario o proporcionas el sustento financiero a un hijo que estudia en la universidad, puedes ser elegible para reclamar valiosos créditos para la educación.

  • El Crédito de Oportunidad Americana es reembolsable hasta $1,000. Esto significa que podrías recibir hasta $1,000 aunque no tengas una factura de impuestos. El crédito total es de $2,500 por estudiante y se aplica solo a los fondos pagados para cubrir los primeros cuatro años de gastos calificados de educación superior de grado.
  • Si estás cursando estudios de posgrado o superiores, podrías ser elegible para el Crédito Perpetuo por Aprendizaje. Puedes reclamar el 20 % de tus gastos calificados de hasta $10,000 o un máximo de $2,000 por declaración de impuestos, según tus ingresos.
