Darte cuenta de que tienes que realizar la presentación de impuestos por primera vez puede llegar a ser un poco intimidante. Pero no hay razones para estar preocupado.

Si hace poco que has comenzado a ganar dinero o si recién te mudas a los Estados Unidos, hay una serie de datos que debes conocer.

Para comenzar tendrás que saber cuál es la cantidad de dinero que has ganado que tendrás que informar. Si eres un empleado, esta información, junto con la cantidad de impuestos que has pagado durante el año, será informada en el formulario W-2. Pero si tienes un trabajo temporal o si estás bajo un contrato, el gobierno de Estados Unidos considerará que eres un trabajador autónomo o independiente, por lo que la persona o la compañía para la que trabajes tendrá que informar tus ganancias en el formulario 1099-MISC.

Luego necesitarás saber cuál es tu estado civil, ya que esto determinará significativamente la cantidad de impuestos que tendrás que pagar. Los estados civiles más comunes son soltero, casado que presenta separado, jefe de familia y casado que presenta junto.

El IRS (Servicio de Rentas Internas) te permitirá efectuar una deducción estándar, lo que significa que es un monto fijo que será sustraído de tus ingresos, lo que redunda en una reducción de los impuestos que deberás pagar. A algunos estados civiles les corresponde una deducción estándar mayor que a otros. De todas maneras, también tienes la opción de detallar tus gastos en lugar de elegir una deducción estándar; pero en general sólo deberás hacer eso si este proceso te brinda una deducción mayor.

Tu estado civil también determinará qué tasa impositiva tendrás que usar para calcular lo que debes. Por ejemplo, si dos personas informan la misma cantidad de base gravable pero una se encuentra como soltero y la otra como jefe de familia, será esta última quien pague una cantidad considerablemente inferior de impuestos. Ten en cuenta, además, que necesitarás satisfacer algunos requerimientos para poder optar por esta opción, antes de informar que eres un jefe de familia.

Puede parecer un poco complicado, pero lo será a menos que sepas cuál será tu estado civil y si irás a hacer un detalle o si tomarás una deducción estándar, lo que te permitirá saber qué formulario impositivo completarás.

Cualquiera puede informar su impuestos en el formulario de tamaño completo 1040, pero el 1040A y el 1040EZ, los cuales son más cortos que el 1040, también están disponibles. Si usas el 1040A no podrás detallar y no tendrás tantas opciones de deducciones. El 1040EZ es todavía más corto que el 1040A, y no permite efectuar un detalle, tiene aún más limitaciones de deducciones y sólo permite dos opciones de estados civiles.
