Declarar impuestos no tiene que ser complicado para los principiantes. Cuanto más aprendas sobre el sistema tributario, menos estrés sentirás cuando presentes tu declaración de impuestos por primera vez.

Averiguar lo que no sabes puede darle sentido a cada elemento del formulario en el que presentas tu declaración.

Quiénes deben presentar declaraciones

"Antes de terminar con dolor de cabeza por leer las normas del Servicio de Impuestos Internos, debes determinar si tienes que reportar tu ingreso", comenta un experto.

Desde Cora Parks (Atlanta), el autor del blog TaxToday afirma que los contribuyentes principiantes deben fijarse si han recibido suficientes ingresos para el año tributario como para que se active la obligatoriedad de presentación.

"Esta cantidad se determina por el estado civil tributario de quien realiza la presentación, su edad y su situación de dependencia", agrega Parks.

Por ejemplo, en 2024, si eres menor de 65 años y declaras tus impuestos como soltero o casado que presenta la declaración por separado, por lo general, tienes que presentar una declaración de impuestos si tu ingreso bruto es de $14,600.

En la Tabla A de "Instrucciones sobre el Formulario 1040 de 2024", se detallan diez situaciones de presentación diferentes y el límite de ingresos correspondiente a partir del cual debes presentar tu declaración.

Por otro lado, como comenta Parks, un trabajador por cuenta propia que ganó la misma cantidad no puede liberarse de esta obligación tan fácilmente. Esta persona es responsable por la cantidad total de impuestos adeudados al Gobierno, en lugar de solo la mitad, como es el caso de un individuo cuyo empleador retiene el pago de impuestos sobre los ingresos y lo envía al Gobierno.

Presentar la declaración de impuestos no tiene por qué ser complicado para los principiantes. Como la mayoría de los primerizos no tienen dependientes ni tantas reclamaciones, son elegibles para una versión simple del Formulario 1040. Si tus impuestos son más complicados, tendrás que adjuntar varios anexos y formularios que le proporcionen al IRS la información necesaria para procesar tu declaración de impuestos.

Independientemente de si estás obligado a presentar la declaración o no, es recomendable que lo hagas porque, si tu empleador ha estado reteniendo impuestos, es posible que te deban un reembolso.

El poder de las deducciones

Contabilizar los gastos deducibles vale la pena para quienes deseen ahorrar dinero, pero puede ser un problema para aquellos que tiran los recibos y les resulta difícil anotar datos como millaje y transacciones de gastos.

Ser capaz de deducir los gastos de tu empresa o de tu hogar puede ser uno de los lados positivos de declarar impuestos. Estas deducciones pueden reducir tus impuestos y, quizás, hacer que recibas un reembolso.

"Pero tienes que comprobar lo que has gastado", observa Karen M. Reed, directora de comunicaciones de TaxResources Inc., en Citrus Heights (California).

"Debes tener la documentación en orden para cuando prepares tu declaración de impuestos, no un par de años después, cuando te llegue una auditoría y no puedas recordar lo que hiciste hace tanto tiempo", advierte. "Muchos contribuyentes se perjudican a sí mismos con las deducciones por no llevar bien los registros".

"Si posteriormente el IRS te cuestiona las deducciones", explica Reed, "te rechazarán aquellas que no puedas justificar con documentación".

La mayoría de las deducciones necesitan una factura y un comprobante de pago, como un cheque cancelado o el estado de cuenta de la tarjeta de crédito.

Según Reed, se deben cumplir varias condiciones para que el IRS apruebe cualquier deducción, por lo que recomienda a los contribuyentes que se tomen el tiempo para entender la diferencia entre gastos personales y gastos de la empresa.

"Muchos contribuyentes primerizos creen que pueden deducir la totalidad de sus comidas con los compañeros de trabajo como 'comidas de negocios'", comenta Reed. "Otro ejemplo son los regalos empresariales. La mayoría de las personas no se da cuenta de que el descuento tiene un límite de $25 por beneficiario, por año tributario".

El contribuyente también debe saber que no todas las deducciones afectan la cantidad de impuesto sobre ingresos por pagar o la cantidad del reembolso.

"Muchos contribuyentes primerizos se sorprenden cuando los gastos médicos que ingresan en un programa de impuestos no cambian el resultado final de sus declaraciones", sostiene Reed. "Pero el motivo es que existen limitaciones a estos gastos, que solo son deducibles cuando se supera un determinado porcentaje del Ingreso Bruto Ajustado".

Estado Civil, Formulario W-2 y Formulario 1099

Charles Davidson, propietario de la empresa Accelerated Education Systems, ubicada en Redding, (California) explica que la mayoría de los contribuyentes primerizos con los que se ha encontrado tienen más de un Formulario W-2, el formulario que prepara un empleador, en el que se muestran los salarios brutos y netos de los empleados junto con los impuestos federales, estatales, de Seguro Social y de Medicare retenidos.

Según comenta Davidson, es importante que los primerizos sepan que no pueden presentar su declaración hasta que tengan el Formulario W-2 de cada empleador.

"Algunos primerizos se sorprenden al enterarse de que han estado contribuyendo a un plan 401(k) o a un plan de jubilación a través de sus empleadores", señala. "Las contribuciones a un plan de jubilación pueden hacer que el contribuyente pueda reclamar el Crédito por Contribuciones para Ahorros para la  Jubilación".

También debes considerar el estado civil tributario, que puede ser soltero, casado que presenta la declaración de forma conjunta o jefe de familia. "Identificar el estado civil tributario correcto puede resultar complicado entre los tantos arreglos de vida no tradicionales actuales", señaló Davidson, y agregó que algunos no entienden lo que significa "jefe de familia" cuando lo reclaman.

"Muchos tratan de presentar sus declaraciones de impuestos como jefes de familia aunque no tengan un dependiente calificado en el hogar", expresó Davidson. "Como implica una deducción estándar más grande, es ventajoso realizar la presentación como jefe de familia; pero si no puedes declarar legítimamente de esa manera, hacerlo podría significar que te realicen una auditoría". El enfoque sobre el estado civil tributario que se incluye en las instrucciones del Formulario 1040 explica las condiciones que deben cumplirse para que el contribuyente pueda reclamar como "jefe de familia".

"Seleccionar el estado civil tributario y reclamar dependientes puede resultar confuso, incluso para los profesionales de impuestos", comenta Davidson, y anima a los contribuyentes primerizos a investigar atentamente los requisitos.

¿Y qué hay de todos los ingresos adicionales que obtuviste el año pasado? Sí, también debes declararlos. Es posible que recibas un Formulario 1099 de la empresa para la que realizas el trabajo como trabajador por cuenta propia o como contratista independiente, o tal vez no lo recibas.

"Las empresas no tienen obligación de emitir un Formulario 1099 si el ingreso es menor que $600", comentó Davidson. "[Pero] los contribuyentes deben reportar todos los ingresos de todas las fuentes de ingreso de todo el mundo. Esto incluye las actividades en línea, como eBay o programas afiliados".

Incluso si has ganado poco dinero pero no recibiste un Formulario 1099, eso no te exime de reportar los ingresos al IRS.

"A estos contribuyentes yo los llamo 'empresarios accidentales', porque no se dan cuenta de que esos ingresos misceláneos básicamente los convierte en empresa", agrega Davidson. "Pueden deducir legalmente todos los gastos que les permitieron ganar ese dinero. También esto implica tener que presentar un Anexo C, lo que puede resultar mucho más intimidante".
