Rated 3 out of 5 by from Insufficient Guidance For Filing in 2 States TurboTax is a great timesaver overall. However, the product is confusing to use when you are working in one state, living in another, and have to file returns in multiple states. It is unclear what goes into the boxes that ask you what should be included or excluded in each of the states. In other words, do you put in the income that should be included for the state in question, or excluded from the state in question? Also, the program asks you to enter in a loss attributable to the state in question, which is generally a negative number, but the program is configured to treat positive numbers as losses, and not to accept negative numbers. You need to provide further guidance IN PLAIN ENGLISH to multi-state filers to end the confusion and ambiguities. Because this area is so confusing and murky, tax auditors in many states (especially NJ) take advantage of people's lack of understanding and do not want to give you proper credit for taxes paid to other jurisdictions. Rather, they try to spin your head five ways from Sunday so that you will end up paying double taxes to two different states. If TurboTax spelled this situation out in greater detail using PLAIN ENGLISH so that people would understand how credits for taxes paid to other jurisdictions works, one would be better able to defend themselves in the above scenario.
