Rated 4 out of 5 by from Frustrating but it all worked out in the end For the first time ever, I used the annualized income and tax withholding method. It required an AWFUL lot of work on my part, plus I had to search TurboTax online help from the community to even find where that was in my desktop version. More guidance on this topic would have been helpful. For example, it asked me if I wanted to annualize my tax withholding payments or not. I didn't know, so at first I answered no, and my penalty increased to something like $232! Without annualizing my income, my penalty would only have been $83 - still more than I wanted to pay, but I certainly didn't want to make things worse! So I went back to that question about annualizing my tax withholding and answered YES. More work on my part, but it paid off, with only owing $1 in penalties! I have never worked so hard or so long on preparing a tax return in my life, but 2022 had some unusual circumstances and our income was definitely not evenly spread throughout the year. This was mainly due to large RMD payments at the end of the year, for which I made a single estimated tax payment for the 4th quarter. Doing all those calculations was really a pain, but I am glad to have gotten the penalty down to only $1.
