Are you missing a 1099 form or need one from a previous year? We'll show you how to track it down in this edition of Tax Tips by TurboTax.
It's important to know, you may not receive a 1099 if the total payments to you for the prior year were under a certain amount. For example, the threshold is generally $10 or more for forms 1099-INT or 1099-DIV and $600 or more for form 1099-NEC.
If you worked as an independent contractor or received payments that should be reported on a 1099 form and you have not received one, you should contact the person or business that made the payment to you.
In most cases, the payer should send you a copy of your 1099 by January 31. But what if the tax deadline is quickly approaching?
Even if you don't receive a 1099, you are required to report all of your taxable income on your tax return. Unfortunately, some payers may not send a 1099 even if they are supposed to.
Keeping your own records helps ensure you track all the income you've made during the year. If the tax filing deadline is getting close and you still don't have a 1099 form, you may have to use your own records to calculate your taxable income.
If your records turn out to be incorrect, you can file an amended return later. You can also request a tax extension by using TurboTax easy extension.
But remember that an extension only gives you more time to file your return. It doesn't give you more time to pay any taxes you may owe.
And what if you need a 1099 from a previous year?
If you need a 1099 from a previous year, you can order a wage and income transcript from the IRS. The transcript should include all income reported to the IRS.
But keep in mind that if a payor never submitted a 1099 to the IRS, the income you receive from them won't be included. You can get a wage and income transcript online if you have an IRS account on IRS.gov.
Otherwise, you can fill out form 4506-T and mail or fax it to the IRS.
