Found an error on your filed tax return? We’ll show you how to amend it in this edition of Tax Tips by TurboTax.
Filing an amended return is a common way to correct an error on a previously filed tax return. However, it's not the only way to address mistakes on a return.
So, how should you handle errors on your return? The best method depends on the type of error and when you discover it.
The good news is, there's a good chance the IRS will catch and correct some types of mistakes like simple math errors or accidentally entering
the tax amount for a single filer when using tax tables on a joint return.
The IRS will notify you of any adjustments. If you agree with these changes, there's nothing else you need to do. But if you notice a significant mistake before the tax deadline, including any extensions, you can file called a superseding return using form 1040.
The superseding return will replace the previously filed original return, as long as you submit it before the applicable deadline.
But what if you discover errors after the deadline? Errors after your tax deadline can be corrected using form 1040-X.
Generally, you must submit an amended return within three years from your original return’s filing date, or within two years from the date
you paid tax due, whichever is later.
Wait until the IRS processes your original return before filing a 1040-X form. If you're expecting a refund, wait until you receive it before sending the IRS an amended return.
No matter how an error is fixed, you should pay any new taxes owed as soon as possible to avoid penalties and interest from the IRS.
