You see offers for, "free" filing, but that really is only for people who can complete a 1040. The bottom of the barrel option that offers no help from a Tax Advisor is $129, and to direct deposit they hit you for another $39. All that being said, after using Google a couple times to figure out if I was doing things correctly, it was fairly easy. I guess that's why I have used them 8 years in a row.

Uploading my 1099-INT caused the system to detect a "penalty on early withdrawal of savings" that initially blocked me from filing for free. I was prompted to upgrade to file because of that penalty. The problem was that I didn't withdraw anything. I asked the chatbot for help; it provided me with an article that referenced an early withdrawal penalty box appeared on that form. Therefore, I deleted the existing info for that form, which had been uploaded. Manually entering that information allowed me to file for free.

A simple tax return is one that's filed using IRS Form 1040 only, without having to attach any forms or schedules. Only certain taxpayers are eligible.
