Rated 1 out of 5 by from Turbo Tax requires reactivation after each update. Each time I would open Turbo Tax the software would update and after the update it would ask for the activation code. Once I opened and updated the software 5 times it stated that I have exceeded the max number of installs even though it has only been installed on one computer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Maurie the tax expert After multiple attempts at fixing our return, we got a hold of Maurie, a true tax expert. It turns out we had the information in the wrong place, and he guided us through entering it in the correct lines to clear out our error.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Failed to perform basic software tasks The professionals assisting me with my taxes were flawless. However the software itself left a lot to be desired. From the starting point, you're asked to upload documents, and then there's the ability to choose self service. If you choose self service, it starts the process again, but retains the existing documents. This creates confusion for the certified professionals, who might see something like two home loan documents, or two W-2's, etc. From there, I was notified that I needed to file a tax extension. This was fine, as it was 4/6 and the filing date was 4/18. However, TurboTax, after asking several questions and giving me an estimate, failed to successfully send the extension to the IRS, but also didn't notify me. It was only after I got very nervous watching for any financial deductions that I was able to get the answer that the extension had not been processed and had been rejected. This meant scrambling to file the extension by paper after the fact, despite having my due diligence to do it correctly. Finally, after my (wonderful, superb and talented) tax professional completed the tax information, there was a field that needed amending. This process was not easy and straightforward; it required me to sign out of the TurboTax software and my understanding is we eventually filed a ticket. Even if it eventually comes down to the humans using the software were at fault, the software shouldn't be so difficult to use that it requires me to sign out, or gives the impression that it requires me to sign out. These are the things that breed tax return errors, which affect end customers. In short, even if the error was caused by the user, the failure is on the developers for making the system behave that way, or allowing that to occur. The software's behavior led to an incredibly frustrating user experience. This is the second year in a row that I've had issues filing my taxes with TurboTax. I used it last year to prepare, and then snail mail it out, due to frustration with the eFiling system that was not working for me. And now, this year, filing for the extension - which is a very basic piece of paperwork - was not successful. If I had to go through this experience again, I would just do that part of the filing myself instead of relying on TurboTax, which is not the statement you want to make about the company handling your finances and tax filings. Now, because of this lack of faith in the software, I will have to watch the IRS website very closely, making sure that it did in fact actually go through, and was not stalled and then failed to file for some random reason and didn't tell me. It's worth noting that I am a tech savvy individual working in the industry, so we're not talking about someone unfamiliar with how this should be.
