Even the beginner can be guided through the process of filing your taxes. I like the way it takes the user through each component of your taxes, first assets, and income, then expenses and deductions. They have comments and places to get further explanations of items. If you're not an accountant, who remembers all the terminology? Another feature is it updates the program to the latest tax laws.

And I was never able to locate where to enter prior year loss carry-forward information. I also could not find instructions for entering this information. Considering the large up-charge for investor income (stock trading and rental income both), Turbo Tax is sadly lacking in user friendly input and has no useful help instructions on these topics.

If you have a simple tax return, you can file for free yourself with TurboTax Free Edition, or you can file with TurboTax Live Assisted Basic or TurboTax Live Full Service Basic at the listed price.

A simple tax return is one that's filed using IRS Form 1040 only, without having to attach any forms or schedules. Only certain taxpayers are eligible.
