However, as years progress, the service gets more expensive and the quality of experience diminishes. I went to file before the deadline, paid, saw that TurboTax accepted my payment, and went about my business. A month later with no info on the return, I log in to see that the paperwork was never filed because “didn’t complete the signing”. I could accept this as being solely my fault if it wasn’t for the fact that TurboTax charged me (which I saw immediately), and then never sent out an email afterwords warning or stating that I hadn't completed filing before the deadline. This is the last year that I will use TurboTax.

If you have a simple tax return, you can file for free yourself with TurboTax Free Edition, or you can file with TurboTax Live Assisted Basic or TurboTax Live Full Service Basic at the listed price.

A simple tax return is one that's filed using IRS Form 1040 only, without having to attach any forms or schedules. Only certain taxpayers are eligible.
