I found out how to input 1099 R's on the forum with no real help in the program itself. My state does not tax retirement income, but because the 1009 R's are treated as miscellaneous income it doesn't carry ove to the state and adjustments need to made. Whee to make those adjustments are not very clear in the state program.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but Not Great First time in many years not having an accountant do my taxes. Mostly a positive experience; loved that it could automatically pull in the W-2s (4 between us) from payroll services. However, not really happy with the state processing. It did correctly walk me through entering both states - non-resident first, then resident. But it didn't automatically calculate the tax credit in my resident state. Once I "started" that process, it did bring in the correct numbers from the non-resident state. But if I hadn't gone looking for where to put that credit in, I would have ended up paying tax on the same income in two different states. It worked out to about a $400 difference!

Over that time I have found that new or additional changes to tax law are often not well explained or implemented by the program. Possibly Turbo Tax is not responsible for that because perhaps the government feed on the issue is less than clear, correct and convincing. Still, it leaves the use in limbo and requires making of unfounded assumptions in order to complete the return.
