Turbo tax is easy
I tried with H&R first. They couldn't get things right and when I asked for help, they said they would charge me to talk to a person. Turbo tax might cost you some money but you get it done fast and easy.

State charges are a ripoff
Over $200 to download and file state forms for our home state plus two others (for us and kids) is crazy. $125 in state filing fees alone. And the state products are awful -- California was so bad it should not have been released. And I'm sick of TT "forgetting" answers to questions, so when you go back through a section you have to fill half of it out again. Ugh.

Technology Nightmare
Although my password with Intuit was correct, it said it was incorrect. No Problem...I'll just request to change it. Simple! Um...no. Not simple. I spent 2 hours of technology glitches and freezing my account even though I correctly answered all questions over and over and over, I spent another hour with customer service who could not help me. They had to recover the entire account email, so I had to switch to a different email and wait another hour to get an email saying the account had been recovered. I could not install the download until the login issue was fixed. While I completed my taxes, the program froze about 10 times and I had to close it and restart my computer over and over. I have been using TurboTax for 23 years. I will NEVER EVER EVER use it again. Congratulations TurboTax. You lost a very long-term customer. I hope you lose more.

Intuit Agents were Fantastic
Needed to do an amended return, and they stay with me the whole time walking me through the process. It took 1-1/2 hours, and they were great. Thank you Intuit for a great product and customer service staff.

Relatively Painless Process
Entering information isn't difficult. The sequence of questions is logical, and I found most of what I needed on the documents I had on hand. There were a couple of questions regarding 1099-R forms that I couldn't answer, and I had to meet with my financial advisor to figure out what was going on. It turned out that one distribution was a premium for long-term care insurance that I didn't really need (I already had it through another annuity product), and I'll be moving those funds to different annuity. One thing that I didn't much care for was that it wasn't a straightforward process to determine how much TurboTax was going to cost. I asked "Help" how much it would be, and was given another website to go to. There wasn't a simple checklist with a sum that would appear at the bottom. It was more like "go through the process and we'll tell you when you're done." I didn't think that the cost was excessive, but I would have liked to have know it up front.

State form not easy to file.
Filing the Federal Tax form was explained well. There was an error with the state form that was very difficult for me to find and fix. I had to eliminate the form and start again. It kept saying everything looked great when I knew it was wrong. I couldn't find in the state form where I had added an estimated tax. It took a large amount of time and was very frustrating when I was trying to find paid estimated taxes for state. I would have lost $1600 if I had gone with what turbo tax was telling me.

Not just bad, actively bad
It feels like it's actively designed to make things harder, every few forms it will re-ask for upsells. trying to update a form from a specific bank from previous years either requires logging in through this or will remove all useful information so you have to retype information it knew in the previous page. if there's a form thats on a previous year thats no longer relevant it will promt you to fix it, but has no option to remove it. going through it's workflow loops you back to the start, no combination of buttons breaks out of this loop, so you either need to fill in all 0s or tell it you don't want to review anything. some fees from financial institutions are 0, this is apparently not acceptable, and at every step it will re-prompt you. notifications that I wasn't finished filing came up while I was actively putting in information for tax payment. Also according to their own forums the only way to no get premium is to prepay. There is no option to not upgrade. Many pages loop or seemingly break so often information needs to be put in twice, my cynical side thinks this might be intentional as one of the last pages prompts for consent to file for you, then without changing any significant portion of the pages, and identical input dials prompts for you to share your data. Also many pages have forced waits while text slowly fades in seemingly just to frustrate users. I will go out of my way to avoid ever using this product or any offering from intuit again.
