turbo tax was good
Turbo tax was pretty good. It was nice that it explained why certain items needed to be included. It was frustrating when it would say that I was almost done but then it would say just a few more things.

Turbo Tax got me tax breaks that I had no idea were even available to me.I have been using them for over 8 years now, and would recommend them in a heart beat.

TurboTax worse AND more expensive each year
1) The online payment mechanism was always weak in TurboTax taking you out of the program than back in (with luck and no mention of how it will work). It got worse: Under windows 10 that special window is very buggy: You try to resize it and it goes hiding behind the main TurboTax window and can't be touched any longer! All you can do is close it fully and restart. Of course all your info must be entered again :( 2) If you have a Identity Protection Pin it won't ask about it. You have to remember to explicitly direct the program to the sub menu (> Fed Taxes > Other Tax Situations > etc.). Help the user? 3) I finally was ready to transmit and then after I hit the final button, it comes back with "We found an error that we could not see before". What!? This is after having been ensured that the return was fine and ready to send. 4) To top it off it then wanted a 1099-MISC BOX 17 state code and the program could not help me figure out what I should put here. It asked this in the form format, so no walk through. The form itself said two letters, so I guessed I put my home state (CA) - right? Let's hope so - thanks for not guiding anything that's a bit difficult TurboTax! 5) Oh, let's also do away with importing W2's and other items from financial institutions: You now have to sign up - supposedly for "security reasons". To avoid massive frustration anticipated with yet another signup and password loop, I simply entered everything by hand which saved me a considerable amount of time for sure. Note that the import process was always buggy anyway, typically requiring you to find out yourself the fair value at which stocks were acquired from reports (often hardcopy) that come from the same financial institution that TurboTax is suppodly downloading from. This is really not worth it, now that I would face two problems (sign up loop and incomplete downloads). 6) Purchased dluxe through Costco online. What a chore. First, after you purchase it takes about 1 hr before you get the product code. What!?!? One hour for modern day computers to route a fully anticipated part of the process to me!?!? Unbelievable. 7) But of course the price sky rockets while quality issues mount: The price for deluxe purchased online through Costco was $47.99 (yes), and I was at least salivating already over the promised $10 rebate toward the state product. But then when you read the fine print you have to use the same credit card as the one used for the main purchase. Well this led to some logistical difficulties that I will try to avoid explaining here but involved my wife and I to get involved - let's make it hard again. The state product is also an astonishing $45. So I got this down to $35 - yippee! But wait, for efile you must pay another $25 and go through the very fragile (buggy) window item that I already referred to above AGAIN. So after wasting some more time and now having paid three times, we are at $48 + $45 - $10 + $25 = $108 !! If the product and the experience was great this might be acceptable - but the experience is rather stressful and frustratingly buggy and slow. Please become the company you used to be long ago.
