Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good service, until it's time to pay TurboTax is an easy service to use that makes filing taxes as smooth as possible. But it is still a corporation and thus must still make money somehow. They do this by smoothing the process over as much as possible, besides dangling services (such as their "MAXX" service) over you between every few slides, offering you the choice to give them even more money. And if your goal is only to file federal tax returns, it is completely free. Anything more than that, however, is not. I may misremember, but I believe filing state taxes were free prior to 2022. This year, they allow you to file your state taxes only to prompt you to pay them to file it. And self-employment; regardless of how much money you've made (I myself made a meager sum from royalties), they propose you pay them roughly 100 dollars just to file them. Of course, you could do it all yourself—but taxes are notoriously complicated and confusing, and TurboTax steps up to fill that niche—for a ridiculous price if you are not particularly well-off. Make note that this is not a reflection of the hard-working daily workers at the company; those in support, those managing the website's code, and so on, are doing a great job. It is instead the predatory business model—which is entirely out of these workers' hands—that makes it difficult to recommend this service to anyone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fabulous Federal, Good State, Confusing Local The Federal is straightforward as was most for the State. By having rental income in one locality and my residence in another, and living in a non-income grabbing municipality, the local RITA taxes were difficult. Were the rates for the municipalities just examples to be followed as is the case for much of Turbotax or were those selected for my municipalities? And once the local taxes were calculated it took some time to figure out what to do.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tax experts wonderful--programming was ok Customer service helped me resolve issue of payment processing, and I was able to e-file federal and 2 state returns, saving me from printing out and mailing 60 pages of forms! Tax experts were invaluable in answering questions and advising work-arounds in some cases.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointed with state rules for 2021 Prior years I was able to prepare a second state return and print it without paying the $49 to e-filing. I need a nonresident second state to receive a refund from home sales taxes prepaid at closing but I owe nothing to the state. I am sad I was not able to prepare the forms and print them.
