Rated 2 out of 5 by from Using TurboTax entails serious frustrations For Massachusetts: 1. Every time I came back to Turbo, I had to scroll through all the previous pages for Massachusetts; 2) On page for IRA/Keogh distributions, two questions were confusing: ___________________________________________________________________ Your total federally taxable IRA/Keogh plan distributions received during 2020 are $19,276. To determine the taxable amount for Massachusetts, enter the following information. 1.Other Contributions Previously Taxed by Massachusetts -- 2.Total Distributions Received in Previous Years ___________________________________________________________________ These questions were confusing because for #1, I had no contributions previously taxed in MA or anywhere else; and for #2, it doesn't specify as to state or federal distributions and I couldn't see why MA would need to know all my previous distributions. Some explanation is needed for people to understand the questions. I spoke to two Turbo reps, and neither could figure out what the questions meant. ----First Turbo Expert suggested putting "0" for both questions. ----Second Turbo Expert suggested the following: #1. Put in previous distributions taxed in MA. #2. Put in all previous IRA distributions, whether in NY and in MA. Then see if that affected the amount of tax due for MA. The result? My tax amount due remained the same, whether I keyed in "0" for both questions, or whether I put in the amounts recommended by Second Expert. So, I just continued and finished up my taxes. Note that some time later, after I had already finished, I received a follow-up from the Turbo expert. Based on what he said, I think question #1 may have been referring to any contributions taxed in MA, but all of my contributions to my IRA were many years before I moved to MA. I still don't know what #2 wanted -- perhaps "all previous distributions taxed in MA"? There were other places where Turbo automatically input amounts and there was no explanation of how those numbers were calculated. As I am not stupid, nor am I blindly trusting, I needed and requested explanations. Fortunately, Turbo reps were able to answer my questions. I greatly appreciate the many convenient features of Turbo: existing explanations and definitions, sentences of encouragement, auto feed of previous year's tax info, the knowledge and patience of Turbo reps, etc., However, the extra time spent on all the problems with Turbo [both for Tax 20 and Tax 19, makes me frustrated enough to consider moving to another software company for Tax 2021. I think the software for Massachusetts is particularly flawed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Turbo Tax I enjoy the explanations that Turbo Tax provides for someone attempts to file their taxes on their own. What I do not care for is the hidden fees that comes about until the end when it's time to file. You say its free to start, then when we get to the very end, there is a $40 fee when if we decide to pay with our federal return. That's is unfair. I can understand the fee for filing federal and state taxes with you all, but it feels as though you all are trying to get as much money from us. Not cool!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good product The website is very easy to navigate and guides you through the steps very well. The only improvement I would like to see would be to make other options more clear. For example, if someone does not have an electronic version of their documents it would be nice to have a way to type it in manually and have the step for that option be a very clear button/link.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Turbo Tax is average The Turbo tax product is good, my problem is with how the company advertises it being free to file when in reality it's not.
