Rated 4 out of 5 by from Turbo Tax Review TurboTax was more difficult this year than previous years. Part of it was my fault as I bought the version that did not include STATE. When I got to the end of Federal and tried to do STATE it cost me an additional $45. If I had originally bought the version that included STATE then it would only have cost me and additional $10. Also the STATE version did not ask me any questions. It made assumptions that would have cost me an additional ~ $60 if I had not gone through the worksheets and found that it calculated my state as "Married filing separately" vs "Married filing jointly". Additionally, eFiling is NEVER free. Please stop advertising that you have FREE efiling.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Turbo Tax could modify wording for filing status Overall, it was straightforward except for filing status. When you are legally separated in your state but still considered legally married, it should say: For tax purposes only, you are "considered unmarried" if you have a decree of separate maintenance by Dec 31st of the tax year, which means you can file either as single or head of household (depending on your situation) even if your state still considers your marital status as legally separated but still legally married. You can then file as single or head of household. For tax purposes only, a decree of separate maintenance allows you to establish financial boundaries and responsibilities, thus allowing each spouse to cover their own financial obligations, thus the word "separate."
