Not sure how a complete novice would fare. But Turbo Tax has helps with definitions and often answers 'why is this needed?" to explain certain tax situations. Have used TurboTax for nearly 20 years - no complaints!!

Did my state and federal taxes in about 1.5 hours with minimal searching for documents and puzzling over whether this or that form was required. Slider windows provide helpful additional info without taking you out of the tax preparation flow.
