Rated 3 out of 5 by from TurboTax Preimier not really ready for prime time Have been using Deluxe for years, with a couple of years during divorce & settlement when an accountant seemed needed. Mostly worked well. Was especially nice to find that it took care of importing 1099's from my investment accounts managed by Fiduciary Investment Management companies. Thought Premier would be even better and since Deluxe in 2021 included a state return, assumed Premier would at least also include the eFile for a State return. BIG Surprise. NO! TurboTax still wants $25 for the included (one) state return. Really hard to understand, as a paper copy to the state costs the state far more than $25 to convert to digital form. So, this seems like a TurboTax tax. Now as to Premeir's functioning: Throughout the process, it seemed very confused as to whether the Standard Deduction or Itemization was the better deal. It apparently decided on Itemizing, and then seemed to lose its mind. The estimated tax (Fed-owed) seemed to fluctuate up and down with little rhyme or reason. Then, when all seemed settled on a few $$, I went to the final steps. All of a sudden, TT found 16 places in the form it needed ME to fill out. No clue as to where or what was the issue, but after a while, I began to see that it related to the fact that my divorce agreement requires me to pay my ex-spouse a QDRO amount (not really an alimony, but a court-ordered payment to force me to let her receive the survivor benefit from my pension. When I retired while we were married, it seemed a good idea, even though it diminished our income. After divorce, its inclusion prevents me from changing my pension back to it's full amount, even though she also claimed the lion's share of family assets and all of her pension $$ ). This QDRO is a tiny amount, but caused my a good bit of concern as TurboTax Premier seemed to have no idea of how to deal with the issue, so that I had to enter a lot of information that Deluxe handled last year automatically. Very poor upgrade. The problem continued into the PA state return, where it demanded I create a 1099R for this trivial amount (an apparently inappropriate form for the purpose). I had to look it up at the IRS, fill out the form, and then Premier simply eFiled the state return without the form. It remains to be seen whether this issue will come back to bite me. The worst was in the final stages, where I suddenly was presented with a series of questions, totally blindsided, regarding what appeared to come from entries in the IMPORTED 1099's from my investments. I had no idea what was the correct answer, and the check boxes were no help. I guessed that the items were not taxable as they were apparently trades made by my investment manager(s?) to balance my portfolio and taxable issues were already captured and entered into appropriate places. Really very unhelpful. I suspect these were questions that TurboTax Deluxe handles automatically and Premier Thinks might have some issue with. DUH. I will NOT be purchasing Premier again. It might be desirable for someone who does day trading on their own, or a professional preparer (but who would that be, using an amateur package??) Since I still cannot tell from the final return whether my itemized entries were used at all, or just the standard deduction, and the difference was little more than the cost of Premier, not even sure if TurboTax worth the price.
