A special handling of a State Tax Subtraction (Deduction) for a college scholarship resulted in an unclear filing on both my Federal and State Tax Returns as well as my daughter's taxes.. This resulted in numerous hours of independent research and a work-around in order to file properly. Improper handling of this situation in Tax Year 2013 resulted in a rejected return.
Although my product upgrade installation did not progress smoothly, the customer representative was very helpful and generous with a refund.

For the most part Turbo Tax is a good product. I have used it for years and always like reading into the "explain this" to learn different laws, etc. What I don't like is some of the repetitive questions. I go through my taxes several times making notes of things to make sure I don't forget anything but every time I do some questions I have already answered are blank and I have to answer them again. I don't mind seeing the questions again for review but would like the Turbo Tax program to remember my answers.

Rated 3 out of 5 by NEgirlGBR Great until filing...
I didn't file using Turbo Tax last year, but I have in past years. So I get all my information entered and I see my refunds, for Federal and State and I'm all set to e file...then, all these questions about my car and business, then about taxes withheld last year, etc. Basically I was fine with it until the end, then I entered in the numbers/amounts I thought was correct then the system wouldn't take them. If that information was SO important than it should have been entered long before I'm trying to efile!!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by K934 2014 was not their best year...
I really appreciate TurboTax for helping wade through all the complicated forms, but this year for some reason I had more trouble with little glitches...data disappearing, reviews showing $0, then I go back through and they have a new total, and the worst....the return passed all the reviews only to be kicked out at the last second during transmission because TurboTax has forgotten to carry down one field. It's a complicated product, but we are paying a lot for them to make sure it's all filled out correctly.

As usual I have been using Turbo Tax for years and it has always been a user friendly software. The only problem and I didn't like this year was the fact that the Deluxe software changed and at the end of completing my returns I had to pay an additional $43.20 to complete my taxes. This was an inconvenience to me. The only good thing is that I will refunded $25 for the inconvenience . I'm sure I am not going to be the only one that will be unhappy about this I just didn't this was a great business move. Thanks

Rated 5 out of 5 by our42014taxes Our tax experience
My wife is a tax attorney by background. We have used TurboTax in one form or another for many years. Initially, she said, "What do we need this for?" After doing our taxes that year, she said, "Why didn't we get this before?" I have found that the program is consistently effective in saving time, highlighting deductions we didn't consider, providing a sharp looking copy, and allowing flexibility in making changes without having to do pencil erasures by hand. Highly recommend for even the most simple tax payer

Turbotax makes it easy to run "what ifs". For example, you can find out what effect, if any, claiming say 1000 business miles would have on your taxes. Or what if I claimed a home office? You may find that it isn't worth the effort and record keeping, Or maybe it is, so you go and find all those receipts you threw in a box. A few minutes of "what if..." can help you make sure you get every deduction. Remember, we are required to pay what we owe, but we are not required to pay one penny more than we legally owe!

Rated 4 out of 5 by LeShaka Easiest Filing Experience Ever!
Overall TurboTax improves year over year. I've used TTax since 2008, and considered going to H&R Block this year. After talking with the rep there, he actually recommended that I stay with using TTax since it was so easy to use. My only complaint with TTax is when saving work and coming back later. After closing and opening the program it doesn't bring you back exactly where you left off, especially if there has been a software update completed. Otherwise this was the smoothest/easiest filing I've done to date.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Operadad14 Needs some improvement
I was surprised to find that the Schedule C preparation required an additional software download and fee (while small $10.68 kind of inconvenient and nickel and dime). The K-1 for limited partnership interest could use some work. I also found that the help buttons weren't all that much help. Prior year programs had a better feel. In using the program, I found that the step by step walk-through had to be buttressed by a review of the forms to get information in that was not asked for in the step-by-step process.

Why didn't you include the list that you have previously?
that is: your 2014 income category and expenses and deductions vs. the national average.
What is the difference between TT inner circle (which I had previously signed up for and had a LO and PW which didn't work for TTAdvantage.# and TTAdvange?
I tried signing up for TTA but got discouraged and never did. Was afraid that it would mess up the filing process which was in progress #I am not sure if it got filed as the TTA plug appeared in the middle of it)

Rated 5 out of 5 by DoctorPranz Need separate batch multiple state filing option
Everything worked perfectly until time to file multiple state forms electronically. Once you have e-filed several states along with the Federal 1040 to the IRS, subsequent state filings CANNOT be done electronically. Turbotax blocks this by again requiring that the Federal forms be sent to IRS along with the new state filings. This double-Federal e-Filing is not permitted. The remaining states must be filed with printed paper forms by mail (this is more time consuming but cheaper, and less profitable to Intuit).

Rated 5 out of 5 by TSmith101 Much Easier Business Edition
Overall I liked the business edition this year. It was easier to follow the deductions and how and what could be applied as a deduction. Getting around the software is easy and drop down windows allowed for easy access to questions I might have along with what deductions were allowed and how to apply them. Also good reference to IRS bulletins if needed.
Took my taxes to H&R Block once and had them tell me how much I owed the IRS...have used TurboTax ever since and don't plan to go back. Thanks for empowering me!

Also, it wasn't clear that there would be an additional charge for my state tax return until it had already been completed. I wasn't going to re-do the return on the Ohio website since I had already done it on your software, but it cost me $20. Very disappointing in the transparency of your product offerings this year, and I have been a loyal customer for a long time. I think you have a great product, but you guys could have done better with how you treated your customers. I trust you will get it fixed next year.

I've been using TT for many years. This is the first year I've had some trouble with it. I couldn't get the updater software to work properly, even after uninstalling and reinstalling TT twice. Finally discovered the manual update page on TT website, which lets you download the latest updates manually.
Once I got the updates installed, I was able to complete my return.
Finally, several times the software took me back over pages that I had already filled out. This is a drawback I've seen in previous's year's TT.

by LindaGA Great Deduction Finder
I have using Turbo Tax Home and Business for the last 8 years. Being self-employed it is a great help in learning what the acceptable deductions and credits are. I like the interview step by step process presented and it offers the flexibility to go through all of the categories automatically or you can choose your own. When first learning to use the software, I chose the longer method but now I feel very confident so I choose what areas of deductions and credits apply to me. I recommend this product very highly.

My spouse receives a 1099-misc for a RECOMMENDING dog vitamins to others, which she also uses. She sells NOTHING! This stupid program made me go through a complete business section vehicles, miles, inventory, employees. Then was lousy at prompting me to correct errors. 8 trips through the reviews and 3 trips through the you need to fix this before it can be filed (it insisted I put a mileage on no vehicle used, would not accept zero). H&R Block sounds better and better next year. 7 years in turbo tax is enough!!!

This year's version was missing some of last year's features and therefore had to be updated. However one aspect is confusing. I had some first year, initial investment Tangible and Intangible Drilling expenses in a limited partnership that I was told by tax folks needed to be reported on Schedule C. By doing this I'm allowed to take the expenses as a complete "loss". TurboTax didn't let me do this and according to your Blog I had to report this on Schedule E, which didn't allow me to get full credit for my loss.

I have used Turbo Tax for many years (at least 15) for our whole family, including my wife's small business and our rental property, and wouldn't consider using anything else, even though there are cheaper products out there. Turbo Tax transfers my carryover data, such as personal data, assets, and depreciation, gives me guidance without being preachy, and catches my mistakes. Simply put, it does what I need it to do, correctly and for a reasonable price. I don't know what I would do without it. Thanks, Turbo Tax!

Rated 5 out of 5 by MMJJ1122 Great for any age!
As a 22 year old person, I dreaded taxes and didn't really trust the pop-up tax organizers in my area, considering I knew several people employed with them and they surely did not understand taxes anymore than myself. As a student, I knew I needed to get the most for my money and this program walked me through everything quickly and thoroughly. I feel confident knowing I got the most refund I qualified for, and also feel proud to be a 22 year old who can file her own taxes without having to pay someone! Cool Deal!

Rated 4 out of 5 by Hawkeye1632 Great program, but not perfect
The program is easy to use, I have used TurboTax for many years, so I am experience in the procedures and what is being asked. I found a mistake in IRS Form 8880 (Credit for qualified retirement savings contributions). Line 1 if for IRA contributions, Line 2 is for elective deferrals from a employer plan (I am self employed). The program incorrectly inserted the $ amount from Line 1 onto line 2 and showed the source for that amount as coming from my spouse's W-2 form. I was able to fix this error before I e-filed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by madythelady Printing way too hard
Turbo tax used to let you print directly from the printing center, now I am forced to save to a PDF file and it doesn't print correctly It is very frustrating to have to add this new step to the printing process. And, why does Trubo Tax charge 24.99 to efile to the State of California. I talked to the Franchise Board and they said I could efile on their website for free, but that means doing the return from scratch, which I tried, but way to labor intensive as my federal return I did on Turbo Tax doesn't transfer.

Rated 2 out of 5 by akwendt Very Disappointed in TurboTax 2014
I've never spent so much time doing our taxes as I had to this year. Don't have much pleasant to say about it. I constantly had to backtrack to look something on a form that could have been linked to or pre-populated from underlying worksheets. Not a happy camper tonight. It never offered me the opportunity to file a federal extension, which I would have been more comfortable doing. We also lived in two states this past year, so that was more complicated, but it didn't pull many basic entries from the federal data.

I had to upgrade to use my Turbo Tax..I have not filed my income tax and since Turbo Tax is registered to me I have to wait for that to happen to start process for my refund. I am not happy with the inconvenience and have used Turbo Tax for numerous years and had always been very happy. I am thinking that if the refund process does not go smoothly I will not be using Turbo Tax next year. I just filed a return for a family member....Turbo Tax just didn't seem to be as user friendly as it always had been in the past.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Hobo1 Not the old Turbotax
After 5 calls to Turbotax help most everything was resolved. Pertinent information that in the past versions automatically transferred to the correct form did not, which could have cost us $2000 had we not caught it ourselves. Our tax situation has not changed this year, but we not only had to move to Premier, the program then asked us to upgrade to the Home and Business version ( it was free, but still a hassle). If this had been our first year of using Turbotax, we probably would be looking for a new tax program.

Rated 5 out of 5 by TGLGATTMTA Keeps getting better
I've used TT for at least 15 years and it keeps getting better. For the last few years I haven't encountered any issues I couldn't figure out with a quick google search. It would be nice if you could choose the type of return you wanted to file within the downloaded product. I get the H&B version since my wife is an independent contractor, but I use it for my kids returns as well, which really only need to be 1040EZ's, yet I still seem to have to go through all the other stuff. Not a huge deal, but could be easier.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Navig8r My standard but still with room to improve
It was good overall but a few areas didn't remember previous entries, like if I am a real estate professional. I always had to check that on any return visits. There were also a few areas that were inconsistent, like the bank account information for depositing refunds was remembered from the previous year for the Fed but not for the state. It would be helpful if the computed maximized deductions for IRA/401K/SEP contributions were easier to find. It should certainly be made part of the review results as a reminder.

Use every year for the most part keeps on getting better. Do mist the on disk references. even thought I can down loan the IRS manuals. Would like to talk with a tech more often for both Turbo Tax an Quicken. Phone numbers not always readily available. some of the pull up scene's for informant sometime fall short of giving a clear idea of what is going on.
All in all the program does well, has a lot of information and good guidance and get the forms out on to the internet.
Good job Turbo Tax, Keep up the good work.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Langoustine Some changes are not improvements
I am required to submit the Supporting Details for my travel and meal expenses to a government agency (long story). The current program (for Mac) will not let me print them, whereas older versions offered this as an option. This has forced me to go back to an older version of TurboTax for several years now to create part of a dummy return so I can print these. I am at the point of investigating H&R Block's tax programs to see if they will let me print the information I need next year. If so, I will probably switch.

Terrible this year. Will not buy again! My son doesn't need business, but I do. Yet, your system starts with business. Hard to get to school expenses. Too many forms seem "hidden". Each year it goes down hill, and I think this will be my last year.
Ridiculous that the price goes up and could not do a simple Schedule C or Schedule E with the deluxe edition. My Schedule E is simply a roommate--not a major property with depreciation. Paper and pencil would have been easier, which is what I will probably do next year.
