ERROR 2: Another Year No E-Filing
Another year and the K-1 nightmare continues. Is it Turbo Business software issues or AllianceBernstein Holding LP(AB)'s Schedule K-1 (form 1065) generating the non-correctable problem? AB puts 0 in Box 12 and Turbo rightly identifies that AB is not allowed a Section 179 deduction. However, Turbo will not allow the deletion of the zero entry and the error stands resulting in a 30 page mail-in. Bad news is that we cut down another tree. The good news is that bad software keeps a good human working.

Turbo Tax is a bit confusing to use. Some aspects are great such as importing last years return info, which is the reason I continue to use it, but others require research to understand.

Foreign tax credit handling is very insufficient
It all starts with TT claiming "Did you pay foreign taxes or have a foreign tax credit carryover? This is uncommon for your tax situation." Really? This is TT premier for investors. Having a fund or ETF or directly owning foreign stocks that pay foreign taxed dividends is an uncommon situation? It seems this would affect a significant part of the target consumers for TT premier. Once declared uncommon, the support for the foreign tax credit becomes correspondingly lackluster, lazy, and flawed. There is no support for distributions from multiple countries on one 1099 - again, a rather common situation; there's only a weird workaround. Then, in the review for the section, you are asked to give a "detailed explanation" in a form field, with no context given. TT, you filled the form and did the calculation? Can't you enter the explanation? I have no idea what you did and what is requested here - TT gives no support. In the review (not the questionnaire), it also complains for each tax paid that the date it was paid is missing in the form. If you have multiple 1099s and/or countries, it is not clear which one the request refers to. It just asks multiple times, each time without context or meaningful order. Then there's another review question about "Foreign Tax Credit Comp Wks: Qual Div and LT Cap Gains should have a value of at least X" without sufficient context - this is again because TT can't handle multiple countries and/or 1099s properly. Then there are many other quite annoying issues this year: - TT asked if I again received 1099s from financial institutions like last year. I said yes; after that, the forms were created, but I was no longer given to import the data without deleting the forms again (which I did not notice until the end, so I put in a lot of typing work for nothing) - Multiple times you run into a section which "needs review". It however will not tell you exactly what the issue issue. It takes minutes and multiple experimental run throughs to figure it out: E.g. it didn't accept my W2 as is, with TX wages filled in the state section (but no state income tax, as there is none) - kept wanting me to review the W2 (no hint why). - E.g. stock sale cost basis field cannot be empty (though it is empty on the 1099), it needs to have 0 even if adjusted later with another question. - Tax withholding per quarter does not add up: TT expects a different number - it is unclear why. I checked and calculated this a few times, no solution. An explanation function for the withholding amount from TT would be good. - The review does not allow to leave "date this investment was acquired" blank, though it is blank on 1099 received And so on. Quality control seems to be lacking. The product manager and development manager for the foreign tax credit section should be evaluated.
