Rated 3 out of 5 by from Turbotax poor job on American Opportunity Credit for parents that pay for their kids college costs using a 529 fund this program does not do a good job, while it inputs the school sent 1098T form and the 529 funds 1099Q form the system does NOT properly calculate the allowed "Qualified education expenses" paid by the parent. If a child gets a small tax free scholarship it is better off for the child to claim that on their individual taxes thereby not lowering the American Opportunity Credit of 100% of the first 2K spent and then 25% of the next. No where does it ask the user if they want to use the amount from the college sent 1098-T form "which shows the payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses". It should! Why might you ask.... Because colleges report payments from all sources: student, parent, 529 funds. Turbo tax does not do a quality job of asking the important questions so that 529 funds used for qualified tuition expenses are NOT also used for the AOC "which is what happens". Worst, when you try to override line 27 in the 8863 form, which would solve the issue; the system will not allow you to file online. You would think that they would have a better system they they do. I have used Turbo tax from Costco for over 20 years but now I don't know. They need to do something!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Needed Help Program got hung up on one item, a 1099-NEC. I had to keep trying to correct the information but got sucked in deeper and deeper. Finally ended up calling customer support and Laurie walked me through the prpblem and solved it. Thanks Laurie.
