Rated 4 out of 5 by from Turbo IS Useful; Resolving Questions is IMPOSSIBLE Data entry for returns works well; calculations for the returns are done correctly and follow Government Regulations. The general explanations of odd tax definitions and rules are well explained and have gotten better over the years. But for any question that is unusual, or that does not include the "expected" text, the "AI" answers do not work. Contacting a human is impossible. I spent at least 10 hours tracking down a slightly "unusual" item - a Capital Gain, rather than ordinary income, on a charitable annuity - reported on Form 8949 as a "sale of 1099-R" - with no way to figure out where it came from until I managed to guess, after hours of trying, and giving up several times, that - to see turbotax "workpapers" I had to use the "Print Center." IT IS IMPOSSIBLE to "contact customer service" - I tried 4 times, wasting hours each time, during the past week.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Software is good. I wanted to amend my return and add more expenses but due to the software not allowing me to be more specific, I decided to omit them. The mortgage portion did not allow me to reflect my situation although I did make note of my mortgage position. Overall, the software is user friendly. Not sure if TaxAct would've been better. I used them last season.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Turbo Tax is generally excellent The walk through and explanations are very good and clear. The main negative is the software incorrectly bumped me up to a more expensive Turbo Tax package and I could not go back without deleting data and starting over.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from TurboTax Errors & Shortcomings Required Correction I had a number of significant problems with TurboTax for filing my 2020 income taxes. I don't know for sure whether any of the alternatives would be better, but I sure hope so. My perception is that the quality of TurboTax has declined over the ~20 years that I have used it. (Prior to that I used TaxCut, which degenerated into a means of steering users to H&R Block for anything beyond the most simple return.) Details: I initially purchased TURBOTAX PREMIER TAX YEAR 2020 WIN DOWNLOAD because that is what I used for 2019, and the description indicated that version would have all of the forms required to file with farm income. I entered the data, and, to try to avoid penalties, on 2021-04-15 I paid the amount of taxes that TurboTax calculated would have been due without entering medical insurance premiums as deductions from self-employment income: TurboTax Premier initially didn't provide any instructions in that regard. While reviewing data in the farm tax form ~2021-04-17, TurboTax advised me to use TURBOTAX HOME AND BUSINESS instead, so I upgraded to that version. (Upgrading involved significant hassle of switching to Chome browser (with its inherent risks to security and privacy) because the payment to Intuit didn't work properly via FireFox browser.) TURBOTAX HOME AND BUSINESS prompted me to enter medical insurance premiums as a deductible self-employment (farming) expense, which TURBOTAX PREMIER had not done, neither for 2020 nor in the previous 2019 return preparation. That reduced my 2020 federal income tax considerably. Thus, it was in our best interest to file an amended return for 2019, resulting in a claim for a significant refund for 2019.(2019 was the first year for which our medical insurance premiums were deductible from self-employment income, due to coverage under an employer plan prior to that) While completing the amended return for 2019, TurboTax 2019 indicated that I could file the amended return electronically. However, after going through all of the steps, TurboTax then indicated that I would have had to file the amended return by sometime in October 2020! So, I had to file 2019 1040-X via paper copy, mailed 2021-04-19. As of 2019-09-30, the IRS website indicated that the return had been received but not processed. (The result of a phone calls to the indicated number: First call, IRS hung up after I'd been on hold ~45 minutes; 2nd call, on hold ~35 minutes, then agent checked & informed me that the assigned agent must indicate the status of my case within 30 days, total 53 minutes. If TurboTax had maintained the ability to file the amended return electronically, the IRS most likely would have promptly processed the return and issued the refund, also providing confidence that the claimed deduction was indeed correct. Pending acceptance of the amended 2019 1040-X to be assured that the medical insurance premiums are legitimate deductions from self-employment farm income, I filed for an extension for filing our tax returns for 2020. However, with the 2021-10-15 deadline approaching I resumed work on the 2020 taxes on 2021-10-13. Even though I had used TurboTax to prepare Application for Extension Form 4868, in which I entered the amount of 2020 taxes paid on 2021-04-15, that amount paid with the extension (Form 4868) did not show up in the “Tax Payments Worksheet” or subsequent data for taxes paid, despite the following info in "On Demand Tax Guidance" for this form: "Only after the box is checked, will the amount paid on line 7 flow to Schedule 3, line 9.", nor was it reflected in the federal tax owed or to be refunded at the top of the TurboTax screen. I had to enter the amount manually in the Line 9 Federal field (“over-ride” was greyed out in the right-click drop-down list of options for that field). The tax display then changed to “Federal Refund” accordingly. Then, for electronic filing of the two state returns, the same problem occurred when trying to use FireFox, requiring work-around using Chrome, with its inherent risks to security and privacy. Thus, all-in-all, working with TurboTax 2019 and 2020 has been an ordeal, and if I had not been skeptical of the results (especially from TurboTax Premier) and not checked them, I would have paid a lot more taxes, at least initially. It is possible that the IRS would have caught the egregious failure of TurboTax to include the tax payment made with the application for extension; however, the IRS did not catch failure to enter medical insurance premiums paid as deductions against self-employment income. That is the kind of issue for which I thought I could rely on TurboTax, but was let down by TurboTax Premier.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Had to pay $120 so that my return was filed proper The COVID-19 loan option did not pop up so it said I owed $16K in taxes. I had to pay for the "Tax Pro" to reset the system somehow to allow me to enter in the information. The guy was nice, but that was $60 extra I should never have needed to pay. If I don't get refunded for that $60, I will never use the product again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not worth the value My biggest complaint is the fact that after having to pay for the Turbotax software, i then have to pay separately to electronically file my state return. The software should come with federal AND 1 state e-filing. Additionally, as a former public accountant, I struggle to use Turbotax because I can't see how information shows up on forms.until the return is complete
