Rated 2 out of 5 by from It could be so much better (a) Married joint vs separate filing: TT gives you even less direction on this than in previous years, just mentioning that married couples with large differences in income usually file jointly. That doesn't cut it, especially when state taxes are concerned (since you'll file the same way for state). My state, Ohio, is notorious for abusing couples who file jointly. Of course, TT does tell you to do your taxes both ways to be sure. Gee, thanks for the help ... entering data twice is so much fun. What TT should do is tell you to create separate returns for each spouse - and then provide a utility to merge those 2 returns automatically into a joint return for comparison. That would be quite convenient and helpful - and it's simple programming on the TT side. But I guess the Intuit guys aren't motivated. (b) State refunds from last year: Millions of people have them - and in some cases they're taxable. Since I did my 2019 taxes in TT and loaded them into my 2020 return, TT should figure if my state refund last year is taxable this year, right? Nope. TT asks me if I itemized (it knows this already from last year's taxes) - and then tells me to go back and refigure my taxes from last year manually if I did. Otherwise, they say, we'll just treat all of your refund is taxable. Epic fail. (c) IRA recharacterizations and conversions: IRAs, including any non-deductible contributions, are handled in two separate areas. Why? I have no idea. And the interview questions are somewhat misleading. If you had IRA withdrawals, recharacterizations and/or conversions, you really need to understand what your tax implications are and how the values should appear on the final Federal forms. If you rely on TT to do this for you ... and you don't fully understand the esoteric questions ... you may end up paying way more tax than you should. (d) TT issues payment vouchers for estimated taxes for both state and federal taxes for the 2021 tax year. I'm getting a refund this year (albeit small). I have never had to pay estimated taxes. Never. (e) Why can't I enter a 1099-INT, 1099-DIV and 1099-B together at one time when the combined form comes from the same company? (f) For my state paper return for filing, TT wants to print out a copy of the federal return that's not required. (g) TT can't figure out my bank or driver's license info (required for e-file) from last year's return.
