Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quick but expensive. Quick, semi-easy, but expensive if you need to file anything other than a simple form.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from TurboTax Great for Federal and State I have fairly straightforward taxes, but with enough detail that I would not do them by hand (investment account stuff, for example). Turbotax correctly imported all of my information and calculations. The "learn more" links went to very helpful information. Receiving a refund and paying taxes is easy and straightforward. I filed my taxes in under 2 hours, which included change of employers, comparing itemized to standard deductions, and filing both state & federal. I needed to make one call to TT for IT support, and wait time was only 3 minutes. TurboTax is worth every penny. The tv ads are right: spend your time "not" doing your taxes!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Higher Education still VERY unclear Mostly, TurboTax gives a clear, guided path through the ridiculous IRS rules. (As an aside, income taxes do not HAVE to be this awful -- fill out a British income tax form and it's significantly simpler and clearer). However, the Higher Education section needs some clearer wording. My college-age children file their own taxes and when they enter their 1099-Q/1098-T is says "you should enter your college expenses..." Sorry, please do not use terms without qualifying them -- what do you mean by "college expenses" If you mean 1098-T then please say that in parentheses. I found the Higher Education entries (because it appears on my kids' taxes and then again on my own taxes) to be the most confusing section, both last year and this year. It's probably clear for people whose kids don't file separately. Please try some tests with some non-experts and see where they have uncertainty. For me, it seems odd to type in all the 1099-Q and 1098-T twice and I worry the IRS will claim that I'm trying to double-claim, or something.
