There is also a $39 processing fee for direct deposit, which is new this year. It's there regardless of whether or not I am using the tax return to pay it. The annoying thing is that the total fee is only shown at the very last step. I wish there is more transparency in the beginning. Just let the customers know the exact total numbers for different level of services. The number can be entered for professional and legal fees.

If you have a simple tax return, you can file for free yourself with TurboTax Free Edition, or you can file with TurboTax Live Assisted Basic or TurboTax Live Full Service Basic at the listed price.

A simple tax return is one that's filed using IRS Form 1040 only, without having to attach any forms or schedules. Only certain taxpayers are eligible.
