Rated 2 out of 5 by MaineBison Never Easy Wish you would sit with real users to find out why TT is so frustrating to use. Too many times you have to go back and forth or over the same things. Error messages are sometimes not accurate. April 18, 2014

Rated 3 out of 5 Taxcaster is a waste! We've used TurboTax for many years and are happy with it. This was the first time we used Taxcaster, due to having to file an extension. It said we still owed almost $4K, which we sent in. We finished our return today and sent it in. We are owed $2K, a $6K difference! Now we've got to try to get it all back from the government, a potential headache in and of itself. We won't be using Taxcaster again, nor will be recommending it to others. If you're not familiar with Taxcaster, it's TurboTax's tax estimator program, something you'd seldom use, and I hope you don't have to. April 18, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 Fabulous Help to Get me Through! I can reference copies of my taxes through out the year to guide me in my finances. I can put in a sample return to forecast changes that I am considering to see the tax implications. April 18, 2014

Rated 4 out of 5 Excellent...except..... First thing: I've used TurboTax for decades after using other products to compare them. The market has clearly voted: TurboTax is the best. Having said that...I had an irritating problem with my "first time" state tax forms. We moved from a non-state-tax home to a state with taxes (Arizona). TurboTax was "confused" when I used my new address for filing: it reported that I did not need to file a state income tax even though my new address was clearly not the same as last year's and in a state that does charge income taxes. I manually downloaded the state tax forms and TurboTax proceeded to pick the wrong form for a full year by default instead of asking me if I had been at my new address for a partial year. It took me 20 minutes or so to figure out which form I really needed, then I manually chose that form after doing some research on the state web site. I filled in the appropriate information and TurboTax did its review. It reported everything was OK. I e-Filed and the state form was rejected with a vague error about a template problem. I followed the instructions in the email TurboTax sent to me to reopen TurboTax and do a review. I did a second review and TurboTax said all was OK. I resubmitted my tax form and it was rejected again, this time with a message about missing information on former address. Searching the state forms manually, I did not see anything on the forms that let me put in my former address.... So, I let TurboTax do another review, got a clean result and resubmitted my tax form which was rejected again. I manually searched the forms and noticed that there was an Information Worksheet that TurboTax reported in the forms menu as being incomplete. I looked at the form carefully and did not see anything missing.....until...the third or fourth look, I noticed a small, one character field, in line with 4 other one character fields. The first one was pink the others blue. This was the missing byte. The information on the worksheet....not the tax form itself....asked for the state (not the address) I had lived in previously. TurboTax missed the error completely in its review and did not report a problem with the worksheet. I resubmitted the review one more time and 24 hours later it was accepted. So, to summarize: TurboTax did not correctly recognize that I had changed states and missed an important item on the Information Worksheet which resulted in significant additional time and labor on my part. Rated 3 out of 5 Plenty of duplicated data that had to be fixed Premier is supposed to help with Rental property, but it introduced more errors than it solved. Some errors: Depreciation of rental home appliances is 5 years -clearly documented in IRS pubs. If you follows the logic in Turbotax, choosing the closest match (the easy entry forms indicate you should use tool and equipment), you will end up with 7 years depreciation. To fix it, you have to select 'Computer equipment' which is a 5 year depreciation. This seems to be an old unresolved bug. In trying to make the entry forms simple and less cluttered, they actual lead you down the wrong path. I shouldn't have to read the tax law about every item to make sure TT is filling out the forms correctly. I could just fill out the forms myself instead of paying for TurboTax? The first time through, it asked if I had a new rental property when I responded yes, it named it 'Residential' behind the scenes and proceeded to ask me the other detailed questions. When I saw the property name 'Residential' on the tax form, I tried to change it. Somehow I ended up with a duplicate entry: Residential and Residential-propertyname. I had to answer all the same questions again and then delete the old entry. The 1st time through should look the same way as subsequent times through, and the name should be a question at the beginning. This whole logic of creating a new property entry the first time and then revising it later needs to be examined. This is just a silly design issue that cost me another hour of 2 of time to sort out to make it right. Car property tax: I entered all my car property taxes early, then when I entered data for using the same car for business expenses, TurboTax wanted to take a prorated portion of my property taxes and dedicate them to business expenses. The problem is that it ended up deducting them twice - one as a business expense and then as a SchA deduction. I had to either remove the business deduction or prorate the SchA deduction manually. If TT is going to propose using part of my personal car for business expenses it should recognize that the same cars could be used twice instead of assuming that I will precalculate/re-calculate my allowed SchA deduction. IRA deductions - my IRA deductions are often limited and have to be calculated out and deposited after everything else on the tax return is done. The logic of how TT handles the fact that you haven't deposited it is just confusing each year - basically it says how much did you deposit ($5500 is max, but I haven't deposited it at that point) and then tells you how much you have to take back out (and it fills out the worksheets as if you had already made the deposit and have to remove some. It should ask how much you would like to deposit and then verify that you are going to deposit the maximum allowed, rather than deal with dis-allowed IRA contributions. Also in one place it claimed that the max IRA deduction is $5000 when in 2013 it was moved to $5500. Annoying minor bug that required me to double check other sources for the correct amount. I spent hours cross-checking items like this and fixing them. First time through I owed $8000. After going through all the tax forms line by line for hours and correcting errors (some were my own, and some were introduced by the TT easy entry form logic) I only owed 4000. Then I had to recheck it again to figure out why the difference was so huge. In the process I had to relearn all the relevant tax law to make sure TT was correct. Why did I pay extra for Premier if I can't trust it to help me with tax law? April 18, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 My review I could have a real tax person do everything (and me do almost nothing) for only about $20 more than what TurboTax cost. This software is way too expensive. You guys are making a killing! Good software, but I'll probably go with a real person next time. April 18, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 data transfer Several times I had to dig out last years taxes to " you can find this number on your last years return". Yes, I can, why does it not all transfer over??? Been a consistent TTax user for the last 15 years, but last year, and now this year, not all the data does transfer. April 18, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Snickersmissy Repeat Turbotax Customer TurboTax helps you organize your paperwork, asks important questions you may not think about or know about, and provides an almost fool proof product. The one year in the past 20 I did not used TurboTax, I was selected "at random" for a national study. It turned out to actually be an audit. Imagine the IRS Agent's surprise when not only did I not owe additional money but the IRS owed ME $5000!! Imagine my outrage when the other company I used #located at a retail giant# would not offer me any assistance even though they say they would. TurboTax would not have made that error to begin with. I'm a very satisfied customer. April 18, 2014
