Rated 5 out of 5 by from Turbo Tax is very good Turbo Tax detects changes in my income and explains why something is different. The only problem I had was not recognizing the section that said only "Estimates" as being the section where I would list Estimated Income Tax Payments for the year. This should be clarified.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I bit awkward Been using turbo tax for 20 plus years. Changes you made to be web based and not saved to my PC was frustrating. You charged me for things I have previously not paid for. State return.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Much buggier than last year This is my second year using Turbo Tax self employed. Last year, the experience was very smooth and as a result, I had recommended it to my friends. Everything went smoothly, and I could easily pull up additional information about questions I wasn't sure how to answer. This year my experience was completely different. While there were informative tool tips and help dialogues for some items, these were either missing or uninformative for the most confusing questions (e.g. why it is most advantageous for married DC residents to file their state return separately but on the same return). The missing bits of information required me to google for answers or go dig around the IRS and DC revenue authorities' websites to get answers. Given that the convenient and context-specific tool-tips/help files are a big part of Turbo Tax's value proposition, this was quite frustrating. Second, I kept getting pulled back to revisit sections I had already completed, usually because a field that apparently was supposed to be left blank had a zero in it (or perhaps vice versa, I didn't quite understand what was being flagged). I eventually realized that the issue was potentially coming from income/expense streams that I had had in previous years but no longer had. After deleting them, a lot of this strange behavior stopped, but needing to do so invalidates another key value proposition of Turbo Tax: because we already have your info from last year so doing taxes this year will be much easier. In fact, I'm fairly confident that I would have had a much easier time completing taxes this year if Turbo Tax hadn't saved my info from last year as have the old info being imported seemed to introduce all these bugs. Ultimately, I was able to get everything worked out, and I probably still spent marginally less time and money than I would have by hiring an accountant, but compared to my much more positive experience last year, this year was very frustrating.
