Video: What You Need to Do Your Taxes
Before you do your taxes, here’s what you should have on hand—from your income forms to energy credits.
The One Big Beautiful Bill that passed includes permanently extending tax cuts from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, including increasing the cap on the amount of state and local or sales tax and property tax (SALT) that you can deduct, makes cuts to energy credits passed under the Inflation Reduction Act, makes changes to taxes on tips and overtime for certain workers, reforms Medicaid, increases the Debt ceiling, and reforms Pell Grants and student loans. Updates to this article are in process. Check our One Big Beautiful Bill article for more information.

Welcome to another season of TurboTax Tips. Real advice for real people.
Get your taxes done right any time from anywhere.
If you're ready and raring to go get your taxes done, we're ready and raring to help.
Here's what you should have prepared before you dive in.
Start with gathering your personal information and documents: Your social security number, bank account number, and last year's return.
Next, you'll need to gather the documents to determine your income. For many people, it will be the W-2 you receive from your employer, but you may also have 1099s for things like investment income, an IRA, or Social Security income. And don't forget about things like gambling winnings and losses, taxable scholarships, or jury duty payments.
Then, you'll gather information on any expenses or contributions that might lower the amount of income that's taxed. These are things like IRA or HSA contributions, moving expenses, or self-employed health care and pension plans.
Finally, make sure you have everything you need to get the most out of credits and deductions. If you pay for child care, have the provider's name, address, and tax ID handy. And if you have a 1098 for mortgage interest, or a 1098-T for education expenses, keep those nearby.
This is also a good time to gather information for charitable contributions, medical expenses, or any other deductions you might be eligible for.
Now you're ready to get started.
