Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not worth the money I had a very uncommon and specific tax situation. The first Turbo Tax tax expert I reached out to did not really know how to help, which is fine. I know it is uncommon, but would have been nice to maybe be referred to someone who did. Ultimately, I got a friend who is a CPA and does taxes for a living to help me. While he did not fully know the answer either, we investigated and figured out that we needed to override the automatic import of the federal return into the state return -- basically, I have income that is taxable at the federal level but not at the state level. We reached out to Turbo Tax again and the "expert" did not really know how to override it. Again, fine, but refer us to someone who does. Instead, we were hung up on (no goodbye, nothing) and yet the expert was still viewing my screen and we had to manually end it. We also requested a call back while the expert was still viewing the screen and did not receive one. We ended up filing my state return through the state's website and only filing federal through Turbo Tax. Ultimately, Turbo Tax's tax "experts" should be trained to 1. frankly acknowledge if they do not know the answer rather than circumlocuting it, and 2. there should be someone higher up who can answer more uncommon questions related to the software and/or tax questions, who the "experts" should be trained to refer customers to if needed. Additionally, if there is no ability to override the automatic input from federal into state, there should be. It just assumed that I did not have income that is only federally taxable rather than directly asking the question as it did on my state's website. I have used Turbo Tax for 7 years and had no trouble, but now that I have income from a source that is more complicated to report Turbo Tax was not the best software and certainly not worth paying close to $100 for "experts" who were less than helpful.
