If you don't have enough time to file your state income tax return by the deadline, you can file a tax extension.

Hello, I'm Sara from TurboTax with some important information about how you can file your state income tax return after the deadline.

Some years you may need extra time getting that state income tax return done. The good news is, most states will give you an extension of time to file it. However, each state has different requirements for obtaining an extension.

Figuring out what the rules are in your state is simple. Here's what you need to do:

First, find out which agency is responsible for collecting taxes in your state. You should be able to figure this out by doing a quick search on the computer. Once you find the right website, you'll most likely find what you need in the form section. Since extension forms are commonly used, you may not even need to go that form. If you can't find the extension form, it may be that your state does not require you to file one.

Some states, such as California, Wisconsin, and Alabama, provide extensions automatically. Easier still, file your federal and state extensions with TurboTax Easy Extension. It will help you fill out the right forms and get them sent to the right agencies.

One thing you need to remember when using any extension, is that it is only an extension to file your tax return. You still have an obligation to pay your state income tax by the original deadline. To avoid late payment penalties, you should estimate what you owe and pay as much as you can by the original deadline.
