How much does IRS eFile cost?

Efiling is included for free when you purchase a TurboTax Online federal or state tax product. Federal and state online products are paid for separately.

Note: TurboTax Free Edition, for simple tax returns, offers a completely free federal tax return and includes free IRS efile. No purchase is required.

How many online federal returns can I efile?

You can efile one free federal return (single or joint) with the IRS per online product purchase (no federal purchase necessary if using TurboTax Free Edition). You can purchase and efile as many online products as you need.

How many online state returns can I efile for free?

TurboTax State Online tax software products are purchased separately from our federal online products. For each TurboTax State Online purchase, you can efile up to three state returns for every federal return you efile, at no additional charge.

Can I eFile a state return if I don't eFile my federal return?

Most states require that a federal return be efiled in order to efile a state return. There are five exceptions: California, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, and Minnesota. You can efile these state returns without efiling a federal return.
