What are my wages(1) less than my Social security(3) and medicare wages(5) on my W2?

This is causing me to owe money. I t wasn't like this last year and Nothing's changed in my job for the past 2 years.

It is common for wages (1) to be less than SS and medicare wages (3) and (5) when you have pre-tax deductions coming out of your regular wages. For example, if you contribute to your 401K at work, those are pre-tax dollars that are not added to your wages (1) but are included in your SS and medicare wages (3) and (5). Because withholdings change every year due to adjustments made by state and federal taxes, you may not have as much being withheld in your regular paycheck. Small items affect your taxes due every year. Good luck!
