Question

Asked

Do I have to declare my dependent son's income on my return?

My 14 year old dependent son earned around $2500 this year in a summer job. It's below $5,300 and no tax was withheld; he doesn't have to file a return. Do I have to declare his income on my return? If so, how? TurboTax only asks for 1099-Misc's for me and my spouse.

you didn't mention if he had any other income like interest etc. I'd file a return for your son if he received a w-2 on his own return. Hopefully it winds up with no tax and of course no refund if no witholdings were made. be sure you answer that he can be claimed by you.

Thanks for your answer, catmen; except, you didn't answer my question. My son has no other income, interest or otherwise. I see no reason to file a return for him, and there's no way that I would do so if I don't have to. Why should I? Therefore, do I have to declare his income on my return? Or is it just income on which I don't have to pay any tax?

No, you don't have to claim his income on your return. if he had withholding taken out of his wages then he should file a return to get his withholding back.
