What If TurboTax Is Updated after I File?

You're proud of yourself. You filed your tax return weeks, maybe even months, ahead of the filing deadline.

Perhaps you already received your tax refund (and spent it on Christmas gifts, if you're really on the ball). Let everybody else worry about April 15th; you're done!

Then you open TurboTax and get a message that it's downloading more updates.

Now what?

When TurboTax downloads an update, that update could contain anything from minor program tweaks that you'll never notice to bug fixes that directly impact your bottom line. Fortunately, the tweaks are far more common than the bug fixes. In fact, especially if you filed in January, your update may very well contain forms that you'll never use.

As long as you run the TurboTax error check and review your return before filing it, it's relatively rare that a subsequent TurboTax update will affect your federal return. There's a greater (but still uncommon) likelihood that a state update will affect your state return.

Here's what you should do if you receive a post-filing update:

  • Take a look at your federal and state refund meters. Did the amounts change after the update? If not, don't worry about it.
  • If the amounts in the refund meter(s) have changed since you filed:
    • And you have not yet received your tax refund (or your owed taxes have not yet been debited or your check cashed), just sit tight. Frequently, the IRS or state taxing authority will re-adjust your bill or refund without you needing to take further action.
    • And you already received your tax refund (or your owed taxes were debited or your check cashed), you'll want to file an amended return.
