How to Update TurboTax

Our updates contain the latest tax-year revisions and forms for TurboTax software. (If you use TurboTax Online, you can stop reading – we take care of the updates for you!)

Note: It's not possible to "update" a past-year version of TurboTax to the current tax year version. Here's why.

 

Use one of these methods to update your TurboTax software:

  • Automatic Update (Recommended) – TurboTax will check for updates whenever you start the program, provided you have an Internet connection and have set your update preferences to automatically check for updates. If updates are available, you can download them immediately or wait until later.
  • Update on Demand – Select Check for Updates from the Online menu (Windows) or the TurboTax menu (Mac).
  • Manual Update – Use this option to get a federal update if the previous two methods aren't working. (Currently we do not offer manual state updates; see How to Update Your State.)
  • CD Update – If you don't have an Internet connection, order the free update CD (TurboTax 2008 and 2009 only. The 2009 Update CD will be available in late March).
