About User Access Control (UAC)

Enhanced security, a major feature of Windows Vista, is implemented using UAC.

UAC defines two user modes:

  • Standard mode allows users to perform basic tasks, such as changing display settings, installing fonts, and downloading/installing updates.
  • Administrative mode allows users to perform all standard mode tasks, plus tasks that require a higher level of security, such as installing software and repartitioning disk drives.

In previous Microsoft operating systems (e.g., Windows XP), users were administrative users by default. This situation sometimes resulted in users inadvertently performing tasks with unanticipated-and at times irreversible-consequences. It also allowed malicious software (viruses, trojans, etc.) to gain access to computers as administrative users. UAC is Microsoft's response to this situation. For more about UAC and Windows Vista, refer to the Microsoft site (www.microsoft.com).
