Removing a State Amendment Form
What is a state amendment form?
Many states have an amendment form that lets taxpayers amend (change or correct) a previously-filed state return. The table below shows the full-year resident amendment forms for each of the 30 states that offer them.
Note: The following states do not have a separate amendment form: District of Columbia, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia.
In these states, amendments are designated by a checkbox on the main tax form.

The screen asking if you want to complete an amended return usually appears towards the end of the TurboTax State interview. If you answer "Yes" or select the checkbox, the program will generate that state's amendment form.
However, if you do not complete the form (for example, if you mistakenly selected it), the final review will generate errors because the form is incomplete. To remove an unwanted state amendment form, follow the instructions for the desktop version or the online version.
- Make sure you are in the state portion of the interview by clicking the State Taxes tab and then clicking the state's name (Arizona in this illustration).

- Go through the interview again and reverse any entries you made that have to do with an amended return, such as:
- Answering No when asked if you want to file an amended return;
- Clearing any checkboxes labeled amended return;
- Deleting any entries you made in the tax year field.
Tip: In a few state programs, you have to answer Yes to the amended return question so that you can access the interview screens that contain the information you want to delete.
- If you continue to receive errors related to the amendment form, manually remove the amendment form.
- Return to the interview by choosing Step-by-Step from the View menu.
- Run the review again to make sure the errors are gone as well.
Sometimes, the amendment form remains despite following the instructions above. In that case, you'll need to delete your state return and start over.
- On the State Taxes tab, click Your State Returns in the upper left corner, and then click Edit Return.

- Go through the interview again and reverse any entries you made that have to do with an amended return, such as:
- Answering No when asked if you want to file an amended return;
- Clearing any checkboxes labeled amended return;
- Deleting any entries you made in the tax year field.
Tip: In a few state programs, you have to answer Yes to the amended return question so that you can access the interview screens that contain the information you want to delete.
- If you are still unable to delete the amendment form, you'll need to delete your state return. On the Your State Return Status screen, in the Action column, click the Delete link.

Note: You will not see this link if you have already purchased your state return. In that case, please contact us for further assistance.
- On the following screen, click Yes to confirm the deletion.
- You will be back at the Your State Return Status screen; click the Add Another State Return button to start a new state return. Your federal data will automatically transfer over to your new state return.
