Deleting a Tax Return File (TurboTax Desktop)

Microsoft Windows

TurboTax creates a TurboTax subfolder in the My Documents folder which serves as the default location for saving tax files. If you are looking for a particular tax file, you will probably find it in this folder. If you don't see a TurboTax folder, do the following:

  1. Using the Windows Search function, enter * .tax as your search criteria to locate all tax return files that have been saved to your computer.
  2. In the Search Results window, right-click each unwanted tax return file(s) and then select Delete. Select Yes to confirm the deletion.
  3. (Optional) To permanently remove the file(s) from your computer, right-click the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop, choose Empty Recycle Bin, and then select Yes.

Mac OS X

By default, TurboTax for the Mac names tax return files with the primary taxpayer's name followed by the 2-digit year, for example Jane Rieger 07.

  1. Use the MacIntosh Search function to search for items whose file name contains the primary taxpayer's first and/or last name.
  2. In the Search Results page, look for files that display TurboTax Tax Return in the Kind column. These are the tax return files. Drag any unwanted tax return files to the Trash.
  3. (Optional) To permanently remove the file(s) from your computer, empty the Trash.
