Back Up Your Return (Windows)

We recommend backing up your tax data file to a CD or portable device (e.g., a USB flash drive) as a precaution. That way, if something happens to the tax data file on your computer (e.g., your hard drive fails), you can easily retrieve your backup file.

Note: Your tax data file contains both federal and state (if applicable) data for the tax year.

Select one of the following:

Copy your tax data file to a CD

Note: Your computer system must support burning (writing) files to a CD.

To copy your tax data file to a CD, follow these steps:

  1. Insert a CD into your computer's CD drive.
  2. Open your return in TurboTax.
  3. In TurboTax, from the File menu, select Save As.
  4. In the Save Tax Return window:

    • At the Save in field, navigate to your desktop.
    • At the File name field, type a name for the backup file (for example, Backup 2006 Doe J Tax Return).
    • Click Save.
  5. Burn the backup file from your computer's desktop to the CD.
  6. Remove the CD from your computer's CD drive.

Copy your tax data file to a portable device

To copy your tax data file to a portable device, follow these steps:

  1. Attach the portable device to your computer.
  2. Open your return in TurboTax.
  3. In TurboTax, from the File menu, select Save As.
    • At the Save in field, navigate to your desktop.
    • At the File name field, type a name for the backup file (for example, Backup 2006 Doe J Tax Return).
    • Click Save.
  4. Drag the backup file from your desktop to the portable device.
  5. Properly remove the portable device from your computer.
