Windows XP

  1. Start Windows in safe mode.
  2. Install the TurboTax product CD.
  3. When installation is completed, restart Windows normally.
  4. Start TurboTax.

Windows 98, Me, or 2000

  1. View the amount of free disk space on your computer, and then record the amount.
  2. Insert the TurboTax CD into your CD drive.
    Note: If any messages appear, click Cancel or No.
  3. Right-click an area on your Windows desktop, choose New, and then choose Folder.
  4. Right-click the Start menu, and then choose Explore.
    • From the Tools (or View) menu, choose Folder Options.
      • On the View tab, select Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.
    • In the left pane, select your CD-ROM drive (usually drive D or E).
    • From the Edit menu, choose Select All.
    • If your computer has less than 600 MB of disk space, press and hold down the Ctrl key while you click the Media, IE, and AOL folders in the right pane, if they are present.
    • From the Edit menu, choose Copy.
      Note: Click OK if a message asks if you want to copy hidden files.
  5. On your desktop, right-click the folder you created in Step 3 (named New Folder by default), and then click Paste.
    Note: Wait until the files are copied from the CD to the folder.
  6. Start Windows in safe mode.
  7. Double-click New Folder to open it, and then double-click setup.exe (or autorun.exe if you have a red TurboTax product CD), and then follow the on-screen instructions to install TurboTax.

View videos from the desktop product CD

To view the videos (available only in TurboTax Deluxe, Premier, and Home & Business) from the desktop product CD, follow these steps after installing TurboTax:

  1. Find the perwin.ini file.
  2. Double-click the file.
    • If an Open With window appears, select Notepad, and then click OK.
    • Scroll down and locate the line that reads MediaPath=.
    • Modify the line to read MediaPath= D:\Media (replace D with the appropriate CD drive letter on your computer).
    • From the Notepad File menu, choose Save, and then exit Notepad.

Important: To view the videos, you must first insert the TurboTax product CD into your CD drive.
