Can't Start TurboTax 2005
When you attempt to start TurboTax with a shortcut or icon on your desktop, either TurboTax flashes briefly on the screen or nothing happens.
Follow these links to determine and resolve the problem:
TurboTax encountered an initialization problem
An initilaization problem might be due to invalid entry in your Windows registry.
Follow these steps to resolve the problem:
- Make sure you're logged in to your computer as administrator. For procedures, see Administrator Rights (Windows).
- Download the XercesInitializationRepairTool.exe file:
- Scroll to the file attachment at the bottom of this article.
Click XercesInitializationRepairTool.exe, and then click Save in the File Download window. - In the Save As window, specify the location to save the file on your computer (e.g., your desktop), and then click Save.

- Double-click the XercesInitializationRepairTool.exe file on your computer, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
- Start your TurboTax program.
Your TurboTax installation path is too long
This behavior occurs if your TurboTax installation path exceeds 87 characters.
Follow these steps to resolve the problem:
- Do one of the following to install TurboTax:
Note: Ensure the installation path is not greater than 87 characters, including the drive letter, colon (:), and backslash (\).
- Double-click the downloaded product file
Other programs on your computer conflict with TurboTax
Follow the procedures below:
Close programs in Windows XP, 98, or Me
- Save any work in progress on your computer.
- From the Start menu, select Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
- In the System Configuration Utility window, click the Startup tab, and then look for the following items. If an item is selected, clear the checkbox.
- UA.exe
- Real Play
- gxpmw.vxd
- hkcmd.exe
- bridge
- satmat
- Qwik-Fix Pro
- jusched.exe
- tsl.exe
- lexbces.exe
- reg.exe
- ipodder.exe
- X1 Search

- Click Apply, and then click OK.
- Restart your computer, and then try to start TurboTax.
Note: To re-enable the items on the Startup tab, repeat these steps, and then select the checkboxes. If you use Windows 2000 and do not have msconfig on your computer, safe mode for the same result.
Disable all items on Startup tab
- Save any work in progress on your computer.
- From the Start menu, select Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
- In the System Configuration Utility window, click the Startup tab, and then click Disable All.
- Click Apply, and then click OK.
- Restart your computer, and then try to start TurboTax.
Note: To re-enable the items on the Startup tab, repeat these steps, and then select the checkboxes. If you use Windows 2000 and do not have msconfig on your computer, safe mode for the same result.
Disable Java
- Open an Internet Explorer browser.
- From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
- In the Internet Options window, click the Advanced tab.
- Scroll down to the Java (Sun) line, and then clear the Use Java checkbox.
- Click Apply, and then click OK.
- Restart your computer, and then try to start TurboTax.
Start TurboTax in safe mode
- Start your computer in safe mode.
- Start TurboTax.
- Create a new return, and then save it to your desktop.
- Restart your computer normally.
- Double-click the new return.
TurboTax did not install properly
Follow these steps:
- Temporarily disable your virus-detection and firewall software.
Important: After completing these steps, ensure you reenable your virus-detection and firewall software. - Do one of the following to install TurboTax:
