What is Form 1099-B?
Your broker, mutual fund company or other financial institution will send this form to report any sales. It comes either as a single form or part of a consolidated tax statement with other financial and/or tax information, such as dividends and interest received.
Form 1099-B shows the details of each sale, including the name of the security you sold, the date of the sale, and the proceeds. It may also include other information such as the share price at the time of sale, the total number of shares sold, and the amount of any federal tax withheld.
Form 1099-B is sometimes subtitled Proceeds from Broker and Barter Exchange Transactions.
How do I Enter Form 1099-B?
TurboTax Basic, Deluxe, or Premier
- Select the Federal Taxes tab, then select Income.
- In the Your Income screen, select the Select Specific Topics button.
- In the Your Income screen, select Investment Income, then select the Start or Revisit button for the type of investment you sold.
- Select the Learn More link to read information about each type of transaction you can enter into TurboTax.

- Follow the on-screen instructions.
TurboTax Home & Business
- Select the Personal tab, then select Personal Income.
- In the Your Personal Income screen, select the Select Specific Topics button.
- In the Your Personal Income screen, select Investment Income, then select the Start or Revisit button for the type of investment you sold.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
