Information about Form 1098

Select a link below to go directly to a topic or read through the document to learn more about Form 1098.

What is Form 1098?

Form 1098 is the statement your lender sends you to let you know how much mortgage interest you paid and, if you purchased your home this year, any deductible points you paid.

Sometimes, these forms don't look like tax forms. But they should say Form 1098 somewhere on them. If they don't, report your interest and points as though you didn't receive a Form 1098.

If you paid more interest that your Form 1098 shows, you must attach a statement to your tax return that explains why you can deduct more than your lender reported on your Form 1098.
