Forgot Your TurboTax Online User ID, Password, or Security Answer?

This article refers to your TurboTax Online User ID, Password, E-mail, and Security Question.
Note: If you need help accessing the My Downloads account you use to purchase TurboTax products, downloads, or auto-renewal, click here instead.
To update your user ID, password, security question, security answer, or the e-mail address associated with your account, please sign in to update your user information.

Forgot User ID
To retrieve your user ID, click here to access the Let’s get you signed in to TurboTax screen and choose one of the two options below that best fits your situation:
Option One - If you have access to the e-mail address you entered when you created your account, click I need help getting my user ID. The entry fields will appear below.
- Now, enter your e-mail address(es) and click the Continue button at the bottom of the screen. TurboTax will e-mail you the list of user IDs it has on record for each e-mail address you enter.
- Next, access your e-mail accounts to retrieve your user IDs. If you entered more than one e-mail address in step one, be sure to check each e-mail account as you may receive more than one TurboTax user ID.
- Go back to the sign in screen and log in with the User ID you used to prepare your return.
Option Two - If you do not have access to the e-mail address you used when you created your account, click I need to get my user ID and/or password and cannot access my e-mail and follow the directions below:
- Enter the following information from your tax return and click Continue:
- Last Name
- Social Security Number
- ZIP Code
- Birth Date
- E-mail Address used when you created your TurboTax Online account
- Enter the answer to your security question on the Answer Security Question screen.
Note: If you forgot the answer to your security question STOP following these instructions and click here for more information on your situation.
- Enter a new password in the Password field and the Re-enter Password field and then click the Start My 2008 Return button.
- Now you can print the User Information Confirmation screen for future reference and follow the on-screen instructions.
Forgot Password
To retrieve your password, click here to access the Let’s get you signed in to TurboTax screen and choose one of the two options below that best fits your situation:
Option One - If you have access to the e-mail address you entered when you created your account, click I need help getting my password. The entry fields will appear below.
- Now, enter your user ID and click the Continue button at the bottom of the screen.
Note: If you forgot your user ID STOP following these instructions and click here for more information on your situation.
- Enter the answer to your security question on the Answer Security Question screen and click Continue.
If you are unable to answer your security question, or the one you are entering doesn’t seem to work, double check to make sure you are using the right User ID. Often customers have multiple User IDs, or hard ones to remember, and that is the actual cause of not being able to log in. To check your User ID, select “I need help getting my User ID” from the Let’s get you signed in to TurboTax screen. The tool is easy to use – simply enter any email address you may have used to create a TurboTax account and we’ll email you a list of the User ID’s tied to that email. You may be surprised at the number of User IDs that you have associated to your account. Now you can try going down the Forgot Password path using the User IDs sent to you via email.
Note: If the email displays the same User ID that you used and you forgot your security answer, STOP following these instructions and click here for more information on your situation.
- Enter your new password in the New Password and Re-enter New Password fields and click Submit New Password.
- Now you can print the User Information Confirmation screen for future reference and follow the on-screen instructions.
Option Two - If you do not have access to the e-mail address you entered when you created your account, click I need to get my user ID and/or password and cannot access my e-mail and follow the directions below:
- Enter the following information from your tax return and click Continue:
- Last Name
- Social Security Number
- ZIP Code
- Birth Date
- E-mail Address used when you created your TurboTax Online account
- Enter the answer to your security question on the Answer Security Question screen.
Note: If you forgot the answer to your security question STOP following these instructions and click here for more information on your situation.
- Enter a new password in the Password field and the Re-enter Password field and then click the Start My 2008 Return button.
- Now you can print the User Information Confirmation screen for future reference and follow the on-screen instructions.
Forgot Password and User ID
- Click I need to get my user ID and/or password and cannot access my e-mail on the Let’s get you signed in to TurboTax screen.
Note: We understand you may have access to the e-mail address you entered when you created your account. If you still have access you do not need to change the e-mail address associated with your TurboTax Online account, but you still need to follow the process below.
- Enter the following information from your tax return and click Continue:
- Last Name
- Social Security Number
- ZIP Code
- Birth Date
- E-mail Address used when you created your TurboTax Online account
- Enter the answer to your security question on the Answer Security Question screen.
Note: If you forgot the answer to your security question STOP following these instructions and click here for more information on your situation.
- Enter your e-mail address in the New E-mail Address field and the Confirm E-mail field.
Note: You can use a new e-mail address in the New E-mail Address field or use your existing e-mail.
- Verify your user ID on the Update Your E-mail Address and Password screen.
- Enter a new password in the New password field and the Re-enter New Password field and then click the Update button.
- Now you can print the User Information Confirmation screen for future reference and follow the on-screen instructions.
Forgot Security Answer
Here are some tips that may help you remember your security answer:
- Did you add any numbers or special characters?
- Did you use an alternate spelling?
- Did you add any extra spaces or a hyphen between two words?
- Did you enter two words, instead of one (for example, your mother's first name and maiden name)?
Click here if these tips helped you remember your security answer and you are ready to reset your password.
Note: Your answer is not case-sensitive.
If you still cannot remember your security answer, contact technical support by phone or chat. We'll ask for your user ID and e-mail address (the one you provided when you set up this ID). We'll send you a password reset e-mail, which also will allow you to reset your security answer.
Lost Access to E-mail
If you have lost access to the e-mail account associated with your TurboTax Online account go to the Sign In to Update Your User Information screen, and enter your user ID and current password.
If you cannot remember your user ID and/or current password select the appropriate link below:
Note: If you filed a tax return last year and have the answer to your security question, we'll be able to retrieve your account.
Lost Access to E-mail and Forgot Security Answer
If you have lost access to the e-mail account associated with your TurboTax Online account and you forgot the answer to your security question go to the E-mail Change Request screen and be ready to provide the following:
- TurboTax Online User ID
- Old e-mail address
- New e-mail address
- Mailing address
- Daytime phone number
- One of the following via fax or digital scan:
- Driver's License
- State Issued ID with address
- Notarized document with your name and address.
You will receive e-mail verification that the e-mail address associated with your TurboTax Online account has been changed. (If you do not receive the e-mail within 24 hours, please contact us.)
