Uninstall TurboTax (Windows)

After you complete your return and back up your tax data file, we recommend leaving TurboTax on your computer. That way, if you need to open your return (tax data file), you won't have to reinstall your TurboTax software. (To open your return, you must use the tax-year version of TurboTax you used to prepare your return.)

Important: If you e-filed your return, do not uninstall TurboTax until the IRS and state taxing agency accept your returns, and you complete any necessary e-filing paperwork.

To uninstall TurboTax, follow the steps below.

Important: When you uninstall TurboTax, all TurboTax files (except your tax data file and the TurboTax folder) are removed. If you're uninstalling to resolve an issue, save your in-progress tax data file to your desktop before proceeding.

  1. On the Start menu, select Control Panel (or select Settings, and then select Control Panel).
    • Double-click Add or Remove Programs, select the TurboTax product to remove, and then click Change/Remove.
    • Click Yes to confirm removal.
  2. Right-click the Start menu, and then select Explore.
  3. Open the Program Files folder, and then the TurboTax folder.
    • Right-click the TurboTax installation folder (e.g., Premier 2007) and select Delete.
    • Select Yes to confirm deletion.
